POINT LOMA — Loraine Cecilia Brown passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at the age of 91.

The daughter of Manuel and Estella Cardozo, Loraine was born at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, California, on June 13, 1929. Loraine graduated from Point Loma High School in 1946. In 1950, she earned degrees in English and Math from San Diego State University, where she was a charter member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Shortly after her college graduation she married Edward J. Brown, her beloved husband of almost 60 years, and they went on to raise nine children.

Active in the Pt. Loma community, Loraine dedicated her life to the service of others. Her passion for education was evident throughout her life. She spent countless hours tutoring students, often walking to her local elementary, junior and senior high schools to do so and served as a member of the PTA for over thirty years. After volunteering daily at Cabrillo Elementary for many years, she was hired as an instructional aide, which she enjoyed for almost 20 years. Loraine was also an active member of Cabrillo Civic Club #16 local and state chapters and devoted many hours to their scholarship committee. St. Agnes Catholic Church was also very close to her heart where she was a founding member of Mission Circle, a 6th grade CCD teacher, and a Eucharistic minister.

Loraine is survived by her younger sister, Lucille Freitas, and her children Priscilla Cragin, Maurine Nicodemus (Guy), Ed Jr. (Kathy), Johnene Smith (Clyde), Tom (Tamra), Sharyll Brown (Brian Lloyd), Kathryn Schaffer (Mark), and Margaret Silva (Matt). She was the proud grandmother of 18; nine grandsons and nine granddaughters: Alicia Cragin; Ryan and Christopher Nicodemus; Andy and Teddy Luke and Katie Holste; Evan, Trevor and Kaia Brown; Kristine Crosetto, Patti Pactanac, and Amanda Courtney; David and Christian Lloyd; Chase and Kyra Schaffer; and Hailee and Alyssa Silva. She also delighted in her 10 great-grandchildren.

Loraine is preceded in death by her husband Ed, daughter, Colleen Luke, and grandson Andy Luke who undoubtedly greeted her when she walked through those pearly gates.

Her family will miss her love, guidance, warmth and humor from their daily lives, but will keep her in their hearts and memories forever. They will also be forever grateful to her caregivers with 1st Meridian Care Services and Seaport Health & Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to be made to the Cabrillo Civic Club #16 Scholarship Fund.
