RETAIL TRENDS

During the pandemic this year, San Diego Oasis has been teaching seniors to engage virtually to continue learning, interact with peers and share their wisdom and caring with low-income elementary school students as tutors. Now, more than ever, Oasis is helping to prevent isolation and loneliness through its programs.

The nonprofit organization offers more than 200 virtual classes per month to adults 50 and older. A virtual tutoring program pairing seniors with young students; a drive thru book giveaway to provide new books to low-income students who have no access to schools and libraries right now; and a Digital Divide program for low-income seniors who need access to devices, internet and training are also available.

In October, Oasis hosted the region’s largest virtual technology fair for seniors. Topics included password management, staying safe and secure online, managing finances online and other important topics. The presentations continue to be accessible free of charge at sandiego.oasisnet.org/ tech_talk/techtalk-1.

Free technology classes, along with over 3,000 lifelong learning virtual classes, will be available when the spring session begins in January. Cost for classes vary. Registration begins Jan. 1, 2021, at san-diego.oasisnet.org. Classes are now available to put on a wish list.
