I’m neither a cook nor a foodie, but I savored with delight writer/filmmaker Sri Rao’s 75-minute “Bollywood Kitchen,” a live incarnation of his popular book “Bollywood Kitchen: Home-cooked Indian Meals Paired With Unforgettable Bollywood Films.” The show, which streams through March 6, is a presentation of the L.a.-based Geffen Playhouse’s virtual “Geffen Stayhouse” program. A portion of your $40 ticket goes to the San Diego Repertory Theatre.
Yeah, $40 seems like a lot for what sounds like a cooking show, but “Bollywood Kitchen” is so much more than that. While the glib and personable Rao does prepare dishes of his Indian-american heritage from his New York City kitchen during the proceedings, he sprinkles in clips from Bollywood films in all their musical grandeur. There are also anecdotes, both amusing and moving, about his Indian-born parents.
