Partisan acquittal let Trump go unpunished

-

Re “Trump’s acquittal further polarizes party’s factions” (Feb. 15): Describing the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol, Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell said, “There is no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the event of that day,” but did not hold him accountable.

Seven people died during or after that attack. Police officer Brian Sicknick and Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt died as a direct result of the attack.

Police officers Howard Liebengood and Jeffrey Smith died by suicide after the battle. Kevin Greeson died in the crowd of a heart attack. Rosanne Boyland was crushed to death among the rioters. Benjamin Philips suffered a

stroke and died in Washington.

Trump received no adverse political consequences for his actions, and his supporters are further emboldened. Privilege prevails over truth, justice and the American way. This is how the Republican Party chooses to govern. Will you choose to support or oppose it? Keith Retzack Oceanside
