Rose Marie Hughes
November 12, 1949 - February 17, 2021
HUMBOLDT, CA — Rose passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 17, 2021, in Humboldt County, California. Rose was born on November 12, 1949 in Kyushu, Japan, to Robert and Emi Henwood.
The family moved to San Diego from Japan in the early 1960’s, returned to Japan for three years, then back to California, returning to San Diego in the late 60’s, where she graduated from Madison High School. She married John Michael Hughes and had one child, Michael Daniel Hughes, in 1972.
In 1980, Rose and Daniel (Michael) moved to Humboldt County for her to pursue an education in Early Child Development. Rose taught in numerous preschool centers in Humboldt County before moving to Seattle, WA, where she worked as a Head Start teacher for fifteen years. She retired in 2014 and returned to San Diego to take care of her elderly parents.
Still having the teaching bug, she continued to teach children at the Kids Bay in San Diego, CA. In 2020, Rose moved back to Humboldt County to be with her son, daughter-inlaw, and grandchildren.
Rose is survived by her son, Daniel, daughter-in-law Shanen, grandchildren Tyler, Austin and Keira, her brother Bill his wife Kathleen and their son Jack, Auntie Kyoko, her sons Mike and Phil and their families and her sister Ellen.
Family was everything to Rose but wasn’t just recognized by lineage, as she has so many close sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters whom she absolutely loved and would do anything for. Rose was a very genuine, honest and compassionate person who will truly and dearly be missed. She touched so many hearts, and her heart was touched by so many.
A celebration of life will be held in July, 2021, in Washington state, TBA. Thank you for all the support, flowers, cards, prayers, and especially for the love you showed Rose. Please sign the Guest Book online obituaries.sandiegouniontribune.com
