Neva Louise Ames

SAN DIEGO —

Neva lived with her mother, Margaret Francis Morales of Escondido, and her stepfather, Thomas Santa Maria Mansir on Weeks St., across the way from Cudahy Meatpackin­g plant on Morena Blvd. where Thomas worked.

She attended Fremont Elementary school, Pacific Beach Junior High, and Point Loma High School. In 1943, she married Stephen Bernard Ames, the great-grandson of Jesse Julian Ames, an early San Diego settler and owner of the Los Coches rancho in Lakeside. She lived with Stephen on a little ranch on Field St. in Bay Park, where she raised four children. She was a caregiver to her motherin-law Soila Marron Ames until Soila’s death in1971; Soila was the daughter of Juan Maria Matias Marron, owner of the Agua Hedionda rancho in Carlsbad, and Lorenza Serrano Marron, whose family owned the Pauma Rancho.

After Stephen retired from Convair, they traveled the world side by side. Stephen died in 2003. She is survived by her son, Samuel Ames, daughter, Ana Zmolek, son, Matthew Ames and daughter, Elizabeth De Maria, and 10 grandchild­ren, 22 greatgrand­children, and three great-great-grandchild­ren.

A service will be held at the Immaculata parish on the USD campus on March 11 at 10 am. A graveside service will follow at El Camino Cemetery.
