LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Energy security cannot be disregarded as the electrical grid is vulnerable to electromagnetic pulse (EMP), solar coronal mass ejections (CME), high winds, earthquakes, wildfires and cyberattacks.
The safety issues from wildfires initiated by hightension electrical distribution systems in rural areas is well-known to residents of this county.
It’s more than just decarbonization that we should be concerned with as energy security, affordability and safety must also be co-equal goals.
for families and extensive monitoring/licensing would be a nonissue. Hotels benefit from higher occupancy rates. The STVR companies benefit from lengthier bookings.
If you lived next door to a STVR, how would you feel about having new vacationers every two days?
The city of San Diego owes it to the community to develop a program that meets the needs of its residents and neighborhoods.
Headline should better reflect story’s facts
Re “City pays less to women, workers of color” (March 3): I have my reservations about the misleading title of the news item, which makes it sound as if there is a pay equity gap, while the very second line in the story would suggest that there is in fact none. It is quite clear that the gaps may merely be a result of market forces with no real discrimination being the contributing factor.
Hence, the top earners are that exactly because they have put in more hours and chosen higher paying jobs.
The pay equity issue raised frequently at various times around the country has been debunked when a detailed study such as the one the city conducted has been done.
We as a society are better off when we push for equality
of opportunities and not equality of outcome.
As long as there is no discrimination in pay or recruitment, we should let the market forces dictate the course.
Foreign aid benefits those of us at home
San Diegans are frustrated by the continual restrictions. It has been a long year. We should remember that other parts of the world are also suffering.
Many regions are stuck in a cycle of poverty. Developing countries already suffer from a lack of clean water, food and health care. Global poverty is on the rise for the first time in almost 20 years due to the pandemic.
The progress made in sustainable development is being threatened without the help from world leaders.
There is a misconception that if we increase the foreign aid budget, it takes away from domestic initiatives.
The two are not mutually exclusive. Both are extremely important. We should encourage our congressional leaders to support foreign aid. It is the right thing to do.
It also benefits America. By reducing poverty and COVID-19 abroad, we are investing in a safer and healthier world for us all.
Biden can only reach out so far to GOP
Re “Biden is not really reaching across aisle” (Feb. 27): The writer accused President Biden of not really reaching across the aisle. Well, he can only try.
For the past four years, the GOP refused to work with Democrats at all and did whatever it wanted because it was in control. Now Republicans say we aren’t giving in to all their demands so we aren’t working with them. And, yes, Joe Biden is stopping work on the stupid border wall and focusing on the environment, which includes stopping the Keystone pipeline. And working on COVID-19 relief. Most people would say these are good things.
Just because the writer doesn’t agree doesn’t mean Biden is focusing on the wrong things. He is a very moderate Democrat, and he will try to work with Republicans, but if they refuse to budge, he’ll have to do things without them. There are very few moderate Republicans in the House or Senate to work with.
No reason to keep covering the ‘big lie’
Regarding the U-T’S “coverage” of the CPAC love fest for the former employee of the federal government: I was saddened to see even 1 inch of column space devoted to the event in Florida that was nothing more than a vehicle for the former employee of the federal government to promote his voluminous repertoire of lies and his promotion of the “big lie” to continue unabated.
Just when I thought we were through with this president, the U-T covered his speech like it was still a newsworthy event. How sad it is we have lowered ourselves to continue to somehow think this guy has anything new or important to say.
He doesn’t. To paraphrase an old country song: How can we miss him if you won’t let him go away? The U-T and other reality-based media have got to stop thinking he somehow has the country in his pocket and we still care.
He doesn’t and we don’t.
