August 18, 1943 - February 13, 2021

CARROLLTON, TX — Dr. Bohdan “Bo” Kolody, 77, died on February 13, 2021, in Carrollton, Texas, after a long illness.

Bo was born to Olha and Walter Kolodij in Ukraine on August 18, 1943. After immigrating to the United States with his parents, brother Roman, and sister Sonia, the family settled in Newberry, South Carolina.

Bo’s gift of extraordinary intelligence and curiosity ultimately drove his education in statistics and sociology at Clemson University, Bowling Green State University (M.A.), and the University of Oregon (PH.D.). He was a longtime Professor of Sociology at San Diego State University (SDSU), where he taught thousands of undergraduate and graduate students and personally mentored those showing particular promise and curiosity. While at SDSU, he published more than 70 research articles funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and other prominent private and federal agencies.

Bo held a few things very close to his big heart, including fly-fishing, classical music, cooking, walking on the beach, spending time with his wife and her family, and enjoying time with his beloved dogs, Murphy, Harvey, Molly, and Trevor. He had a true love for life and courage that sustained him in his later years, despite all his challenges.

Bo is survived by his wife, Nancy, his brother Roman, and a daughter, as well as a large contingent of Osbaldestons of multiple generations.

A memorial service for Bo will be held in Irving, Texas, at Donnelly’s Colonial Funeral Home, located at 606 W. Airport Freeway, 75062, on Friday, March 19, 2021, at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA at www.aspca.org under “Memorial Donations.” A memorial service will be live-streamed. Go to irvingfuneral.com and the Kolody obituary to find the link.
