MAN CITY MOVES CLOSER TO TITLE

Manchester City only needs to win five of its remaining eight games to secure the Premier League trophy.

A 3-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday moved Pep Guardiola’s side 17 points ahead of second-place Manchester United, but having played two games more.

Everton was previously in the title mix but a 2-1 home loss to Burnley was the latest setback in its attempt to make the top four.

It’s Chelsea in the fourth Champions League spot even after a 0-0 draw with Leeds.

West Ham can move level on points with Chelsea today with a victory at Man United and still have a game in hand.

Sheffield United started preparing for life outside the Premier League by announcing the departure of manager Chris Wilder with the team in last place and headed for relegation next season.

• The San Diego Sockers (3-5) dropped a 6-4 MASL decision to host Ontario Fury (7-3). Cesar Cerda scored twice for the Sockers during a four-goal fourth quarter, but the late rally could not prevent San Diego’s third straight loss on the season.

ended her almost two-year wait for a title with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win against Barbora Krejcikova in the final of the Dubai Championsh­ips.

downed Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the final of the Qatar Open for his fourth ATP title.

Skiing

Katharina Liensberge­r ended Austria’s six-year wait for a women’s World Cup slalom victory at Are, Sweden. In the last race before the World Cup Finals, Liensberge­r overtook firstrun leader Mikaela Shiffrin with a free-flowing final run, beating the American by 0.72 seconds.

Marco Odermatt won a men’s World Cup giant slalom in Slovenia to go top of the discipline standings with one race remaining. The Swiss skier had a blistering final run as he improved from fourth position to win the race by more than a second. Odermatt overtook his main rival in the GS standings, Alexis Pinturault, and built a lead of 25 points. A race win is worth 100 points.

Behind a strong pitching performanc­e from starter Michael Paredes, the San Diego State baseball team (8-4, 3-2 Mountain West) registered a 3-1 triumph over visiting UNLV (6-2, 6-2) in the first game of a doublehead­er before dropping a 5-1 decision in the nightcap.

• The SDSU softball team split a pair of one-run games with visiting Saint Mary’s. The Aztecs (11-5) shut out the Gaels (8-11), 1-0, in the opener before falling, 2-1, in the nightcap.

• The Aztec men’s soccer team (0-3-1 Pac-12) suffered a 3-2 loss to California (13-0) on the SDSU Sports Deck.

• The UC San Diego baseball team (2-9) gave up 10 runs over the first four innings and dropped a 13-6 decision to visiting Santa Clara (6-8).

• USD pitchers didn’t allow a run as the Toreros baseball team (10-3) swept a doublehead­er from visiting UC Riverside (2-4) by scores of 7-0 and 9-0.

The San Diego Gulls (9-8) dropped their third straight AHL game, 4-1 to the Tucson Roadrunner­s (6-6) at Irvine. Tucson broke a five-game losing streak.

• Murray Walker, the voice of Formula One as a commentato­r on British television with a high-octane style, died. He was 97.

• Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar won the tough fourth stage of the weeklong Tirreno-adriatico race in Italy to take the overall lead from Wout van Aert.
