Changes for Sunday Local section

- ADRIAN VORE adrian.vore@sduniontribune.com

Readers of today’s Metro and North County editions will notice some additions to the Local section.

Community news items that had been running Thursdays have moved to Sundays, starting today.

South Bay and East County have their own dedicated pages in the Metro edition. North County pages have added school news and business briefs.

Communities editor Tarcy Connors (tarcy.connors@sduniontribune.com) leads the news teams for these areas.

“The Sunday pages are intended to expand our coverage of those regions. You will continue to see news stories and features from the areas on other days,” Connors said.

What is Onscene TV?

A longtime subscriber recently emailed asking, what is “Onscene TV”? Many readers have probably noticed it as a source in public safety stories and seen the name in video or photo credits.

Onscene TV is a group of photojournalists who cover breaking news overnight throughout Southern California.

The Union-tribune has a contract with the organization. Editors there will email the U-T that it has covered a local breaking story, such as fire or crime, said U-T public safety editor Dana Littlefield.

U-T reporters might use the video of the event or of interviews with authorities at the scene for their report for U-T readers. Occasionally stills taken from video will appear with the story in print.

“For me, the biggest help they provide is getting interviews/briefings with officials at the scene,” said public safety reporter Alex Riggins. “So when I can’t get out to a homicide scene or the site of a fire, it’s super helpful when they have a SOT (sound on tape) of a homicide lieutenant or battalion chief giving the details of what happened. This is especially useful late at night/early morning when it can be tough to get those same people on the phone.”
