SAN DIEGO — Clancy was born in Kansas City, Missouri to his parents, Louise and Clarence Sloan Sr. He was raised there and attended Rockhurst High School and Kansas State University (Go Wildcats!). He joined the Navy in 1958 and proudly served on the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus. After leaving the Navy he met and shortly thereafter married the love of his life, Patricia (Patt), in 1966. They soon settled in San Diego where Clancy worked as an electrical engineer. They lovingly raised their 4 now-married children, Mark (Lorie), Maureen Quessenberry (Darrell), Michael (Connie) and Daniel (Becky) in Clairemont and were married for 54 years.

Clancy was active in serving his community. An Eagle Scout himself, in scouting Clancy led packs, troops, and roundtables, taught merit badges and religious awards, sat on many an Eagle board of review, and was involved with the Catholic Committee on Scouting at the local and national levels, receiving both the Silver Beaver and Silver St. George awards during his tenure. He also logged decades of activity in PTA and the Community Council for Music in the schools. At St. Catherine Laboure church he led a folk group in the ‘70s and was a staple in the choir for the past 20 years. In addition, he performed with the Peninsula Singers and the Full Measure Carolers, and played the piano and sometimes accordion for many to enjoy.

Clancy also loved roller coasters, good beer, crossword puzzles, musicals, traveling, and sports of all kinds. He was a big fan of March Madness and rooted on the hometown Aztecs in football and basketball. He especially enjoyed the performances (both sports and musical) of his many grandchildren who will miss him terribly.

Clancy was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and maintained his independence as long as he could. He spent his final months at Activcare Mission Bay where he was cared for by the staff, hospice nurse Rebecca and his very devoted daughter-in-law Becky, with his wife by his side. He died peacefully with all of his children present. He will be immensely missed, but remembered for his integrity, honor, and service. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Theresa and Mary Margaret, and brother Tom. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial mass and celebration of life in the summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to the Community Council for Music in the Schools.
