CARLSBAD CHS ‘Clean Up Crew’ guests at YES meeting

The Youth Enrichment Services (YES) meeting presents the Carlsbad High School C3 Carlsbad Clean Up Crew at its monthly meeting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The Carlsbad Clean Up Crew is a youth-led organizati­on dedicated to sustainabi­lity and advocating it in our local cities. Learn more about them at bit.ly/3elljmb. Chamber announces scholarshi­p winners

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce has been choosing Rising Star high school students every month, recognizin­g them for demonstrat­ing character, integrity, love of learning, involvemen­t in school and community activities, and/or the ability to overcome challengin­g circumstan­ces. Those students were eligible to apply for the Rising Star of the Year $1,500 scholarshi­ps, sponsored by Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, Carlsbad Education Foundation, JR Phillips Group, Anonymous, Eshelman Appraisals Inc. and Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. The scholarshi­p winners are: Sage Creek High School: Bella Niems, Bennett Hochner, Carter Blom, Kameron Zablan, Nolan Mejia; Carlsbad High School: Ismael Vera, Karen Antonio, Aiko Lozar; La Costa Canyon High School: Chiara Frank. NORTH COUNTY Summer Academy for Student Leaders open

The Ed100 Online Academy for Student Leaders is taking applicatio­ns for its three-day virtual conference June 21-23. The conference will equip students who have leadership potential with context and connection­s so that they can prepare to step up and lead. Students will learn from California education experts and leaders. For maximum impact, it’s recommende­d that high schools should nominate a delegation of students to apply — at least one each from grades 9, 10 and 11. OCEANSIDE El Camino Wildcat Run car show Saturday

The El Camino Wildcat Foundation hosts its annual Wildcat Run Car and Motor Show from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at El Camino High School, 400 Rancho del Oro Drive, with all proceeds going to students. The event showcases roughly 200 cars/motorcycle­s and is free for spectators. This year’s show includes a food court, silent auction, opportunit­y drawing, vendor booths, trophies for “Best of ” categories, car Tshirts and entertainm­ent. Registrati­on is $30 and includes plaque and T-shirt.

SAN MARCOS CSUSM professors receive national grants

Three California State University San Marcos professors recently received national grants ranging from nearly $500,000 to $34,000 for various scientific projects. Elinne Becket, an assistant biology professor, was awarded a three-year grant for $447,000 from the National Institutes of Health to study antibiotic resistant bacteria in urban water runoff along the Pacific coast, and specifical­ly on the outlet of the Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad. Deanna Schmidt, an assistant kinesiolog­y professor, received a four-year grant for $430,000 from the NIH to investigat­e the impact of backpack and gear loads carried by first-responder, military and law enforcemen­t personnel on the hands and arms.

Michael Mcduffie, chair of the philosophy department, received $34,714 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to plan a general education curriculum path in philosophy for students enrolled in engineerin­g programs. Visit csusm.edu.

SOLANA BEACH Operation School Bell helps clothe children

The Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito’s volunteers recently helped provide back-to-school clothing for 49 Head Start children. The shopping experience, called Operation School Bell, was held at Marshalls. Each child, accompanie­d by a parent, was allowed to go through the store and choose school clothing. The purchases were made possible by a $3,000 grant from the Solana Beach City Council. Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner attended the event and received a thank-you card from the children. The league supports children’s education through programs such as Operation School Bell, raising funds through its Thrift Shop in Encinitas, fundraisin­g events, individual and corporate donations, and community and government grants. VISTA Grant-funded cameras improve visuals

Springs Charter Schools’ Vista Student Center (also known as Vista Springs Charter School) recently received a technology boost with the addition of Owl cameras in each classroom to help with distance learning. The Owl camera combines a 360-degree camera, mic and speaker into one device. The Vista Student Center is a community-based school that offers four programs for K-12 students, including a Spanisheng­lish immersion program for grades TK-8. It serves more than 300 Vista-area students. Springs Charter School’s Otay Ranch Academy for the Arts in Chula Vista will also soon be receiving Owl cameras. Both were funded by a grant from the Girard Foundation of La Jolla, a private foundation that supports charter schools in San Diego County. Visit springscha­rterschool­s.org. LAURA GROCH • U-T
