KNIGHTS CAPTURE CHIPPY DOUBLE DIP

- BY JOHN MAFFEI john.maffei@sduniontribune.com

Finger pointing, bat flipping, woofing, benches clearing dust-ups and a game-winning extra-inning hit that wasn’t.

And that was just the first game of Saturday’s marathon Palomar League doubleheader between league leaders Poway and San Marcos.

Then, between games, things got so ugly — with parents from both sides hurling insults and threatening physical violence — that the Sheriff’s Department called to make sure things didn’t escalate.

“I’ve never seen anything like that first game,” said San Marcos catcher Evan Sipe, who won the game with a tworun homer in the 10th inning.

“Playing 10 innings was enough, but both sides were really into it. And the crowd was pretty fired up.”

Sipe was 3-for-5 with two homers, three RBIS and three runs scored in the first game.

San Marcos swept the doubleheader, winning 10-8 in a first game that featured five homers, all by San Marcos, nine errors — five by Poway, a four-run, game-tying, seventh-inning rally with two outs by the Knights, and a game-winning single in the ninth inning by Noah Lazuka that was ruled an out when he failed to touch first and the run was nullified.

hit batters, and this was one of the more bizarre games in a long time.

In the second game, San Marcos right-hander Zach Creighton restored order, retiring the final 14 Poway hitters in a 4-2 win.

The victory moves No. 2ranked San Marcos to 17-4-1, 7-1 in the league and gives the Knights a two-game lead with seven games to play.

Creighton, who improved his record to 5-1, allowed an unearned run in the second inning and was tagged for a home run by Nick Cook in the third.

No one reached base after the Cook homer.

Creighton allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out six, giving him 63 strikeouts in 432⁄3 innings.

“That homer woke me up.” said Creighton, who is committed to play at Cal Lutheran. “The first couple of innings I was missing with my pitches. I got my fastball command back, started to get some swing and misses on my change, curve and slider.”

Asked about the first game, Creighton said “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was crazy. We were lucky there were no fights.”

Cameron Tracy had three RBIS for Poway (11-10, 5-3) in the first game.
