GOP will have to face truth sooner or later

-

Re “House GOP ousts Trump critic Liz Cheney from top post” (May 12): So the Republican power structure has kicked Liz Cheney out of her leadership position, as everybody saw coming. On that same day, various congressmen defended the rioters on Jan. 6 as “patriots.”

It is unbelievable to watch the mob base jeer her and applaud the Qanon lady and the “Big Lie” of Donald Trump. But then the sad truth is that today’s Republican base is closer to Qanon than it is to Ronald Reagan.

The so-called party of Abraham Lincoln would boo Lincoln off a stage if he were alive today, and members probably would Reagan as well. This mob is trying to scream so loud that it will drown out logic and common sense. But eventually the truth always comes out, hopefully sooner rather than later. Ken Ramsdell Tierrasanta

Re “National Dusgraces” (May 6): Steve Breen’s cartoon captured it perfectly. A political party that rejects Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney and simultaneously winks at Marjorie Taylor-green, Josh Hawley and Matt Gaetz, among others, is in serious need of a makeover.

Kevin Mccarthy and Mitch Mcconnell are clearly not up to the task; in fact, they are willing accomplices in the GOP’S fealty to Trump. What the GOP needs is an exorcism to free itself from the Trumpworshipping fringe that has taken over the party. Unfortunately for the country, it seems uninterested in being a party that can actually govern. Bill Loeber Del Cerro
