John Silva
November 3, 1933 - May 13, 2021
SAN DIEGO — John was born In Philadelphia not far from the Liberty Bell and grew up in New Jersey. He joined the Navy where he met his wife Maida Lee and they were stationed in San Diego, where they eventually made their home. After serving during the Korean War, John attended Purdue University and graduated with both a BS and MS in electrical engineering and eventually received a PHD in biomedical engineering from UCSD.
It is no exaggeration to say that no one has been more proud to serve his country, serve the U.S. Navy, and to advance scientific research and development than John.
And yet, while John could be proud of his many accomplishments in research and development as well as in the highest levels of administration, he was as proud of his family and as devoted to his friends in equal measure. John never left anyone in doubt that he loved his work and he loved his pleasures. It was John’s nature to question and explore, to argue and to listen, to be curious and to learn, to enjoy living and to laugh. And of course, he taught us all.
John is survived by his wife Jean Silva, sons; Bruce Wayne Silva and Mark Alan Silva and granddaughters; Morgan Lee Silva and Samantha Payge Silva, a great grandson Rucker Quinn Gilmore, siblings; Danny Silva, Joe Silva, Maryalice Tiberi, and Charlie Dasilva (Aurora Silva is predeceased), and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by wives Maida Lee Gramstad and Madelaine Silva.
The family is deeply appreciative of the loving caregivers at Activcare Mission Bay and Comfort and Peace Hospice.
John lived a full and happy life and will be deeply missed by those who loved him.
