growth wanes” (May 27): This proposed project is 20 years too late with technology that is 40 years out of date. The article states that the train speeds would be 120 miles per hour but will average 50 miles per hour.

In 2018, I rode the French Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV) from Paris to Lille at a speed of 200-plus miles per hour. A TGV train set a speed record of 357 miles per hour in tests.

I suggest that the project be overhauled with maximum train speeds of at least 200 miles per hour. Alstom was the builder of the French TGV trains, and also the builder of the Surfliner cars we currently enjoy between San Diego and Los Angeles.

Look to the French as to how to build track work for 200 miles per hour travel.

Diego to service San Diego residents in many different occupations. It would be very obvious if you were to drive Interstate 15 in the early morning and afternoons beginning at 3 p.m. That is annoying to this north inland taxpayer, spending all our tax dollars with no hint of traffic relief. Maybe SANDAG needs to rethink its directions. The trolley and bus serve the border area. Why do they need two transit methods there while none serve north inland?

State should invest in more desalination

Re “Budget puts spending in high gear” and “Drought crisis deepens along Ore.-calif. border” (May 20): With $100 billion in new money to create a huge budget surplus and a looming drought crisis on the horizon, it is concerning that Gov. Gavin Newsom couldn’t find any funding for desalination on the California coast.

Such infrastructure investments would provide a permanent solution to the scarce water situation California will constantly face in the future.

Follow Israel’s lead on this one.

Appreciation for wit, wisdom of Steve Breen

I’m so grateful for Steve Breen’s cartoons. He is so wise, so witty and such a wonderful artist.

Two of my recent favorites are “Do you know the way to avoid another San Jose?” (May 27), and the one where Liz Cheney claims, “They didn’t have the votes to oust me” and the three top Republicans say, “She stole our trick!” (May 14). Thank you, Steve Breen.

Red states are trying to ignore a bitter truth

Re “Tennessee bans teaching critical race theory in schools” (May 25): Tennessee is added to a list of red states that enacted similar laws teaching an alternative reality in American history. In another article in the same issue, Kevin Mccarthy states the Holocaust was “the greatest atrocity committed in history.”

Where did Adolf Hitler get the idea for the “final solution”? From America, through the writings of Madison Grant, who described methods Americans used to exterminate millions of Indigenous people in the continental U.S.

The treatment of Africans, Mexicans and Asians

in American history similarly paints an ugly picture of racism. By embracing a leader who gained fame as a “birther,” and by embracing Qanon conspiracists, the Republican Party has lost all credibility. Republicans who value democracy, integrity and character should resign from this party lest they become complicit in its numerous lies.

Biden has better things to do than host rallies

Re “Why aren’t Biden fans holding any big rallies?” (May 27): I have the answer as to why there haven’t been big rallies by Joe Biden supporters. Biden is busy being president and doesn’t have the time or the need to hold rallies.

The last guy in the office left a lot of work to be done since he spent his time holding rallies instead of doing his job due to his constant need for ego stroking. Biden supporters know that rallies do not

Don’t forget those who lack technical skills

Recently I went to go for lunch, and on the table there was a funny black symbol that said scan with phone for menu. When I went to get my driving test, the lady showed me to a computer. When I talk to someone about a product, they say I will text you.

I am 86 years old and have not had the time, opportunity or means to get or learn all this stuff. I would like all these people, companies and organizations to understand that.
