OFF THE WALL

Run No. 2 million scored by Twins’ Donaldson, right?

-

Josh Donaldson of the Minnesota Twins scored the 2 millionth run in Major League Baseball history on Saturday, trotting home in the first inning on a ground-rule double by

against Kansas City.

The Elias Sports Bureau confirmed Donaldson touched the plate for the milestone mark (pictured). The former AL MVP has scored 685 of those runs.

“I don’t know what to think. I’ll be honest with you,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “But I know J.D. only does big things, so I’m not surprised to hear that he scored the 2 millionth run of all time.”

The buildup to No. 2,000,000 certainly didn’t equal the anticipation for the 1 millionth run. Hall of Famers Joe Dimaggio and Stan Musial were among the stars who helped promote the chase, which also drew corporate sponsors for the countdown.

Bob Watson of the Houston

Astros scored No. 1,000,000 on May 4, 1975, at Candlestick Park. Dave Concepcion of the Cincinnati Reds hit a home run and crossed the plate shortly after Watson.

The first run ever recorded was on April 22, 1876, by

of the Boston Red Stockings.

Of course, if you were watching Rays-phillies Saturday morning, the Rays’ announcers said No. 2M was eight runs away.

Then they said they goofed, that the 2,000,000th run was scored Thursday by Arizona’s Ketel Marte, so who really knows? Fansided.com also reported Marte’s feat.

MLB also hit a big number last weekend when Seattle rookie catcher Jose Godoy became the 20,000th player in MLB history.

Speaking of Godoy, Mariners manager Scott Servais reported on Siriusxm’s Power Alley on Thursday that Godoy’s nickname is Yodog. How very clever.

Trivia question

Watson, nicknamed “Bull,” hit 184 career home runs over 19 seasons seasons for the Astros, Red Sox, Yankees and Braves. What was his career batting average?

They said it

Today, we wish a speedy recovery to Dwight Perry of The Seattle Times, who writes and compiles many of the funny quotes we like to run in Off The Wall, especially on Sundays.

Perry is on hiatus dealing with a health issue.

Here’s one from Perry from 1999, his very first Sideline Chatter column:

“USA Network announced plans for a movie on the life of

Marge Schott, the former Cincinnati Reds owner who was twice suspended by baseball for remarks considered offensive to minorities and women.

“If Pete Rose were a betting man, he might say that

is a sure shot for the lead role. But bigger questions remain, such as who’s going to play Schottzie the dog? Or Pete? Or Lou Piniella?

“Or better yet: Who’d want to watch it?”

From Cubs manager

Ross, after Thursday’s crazy play by Javy Baez that made the Pirates look litke a bad Little League team: “He just makes crazy things happen. … He runs in moments, and guys just forget how to play baseball sometimes. That’s what he creates. That havoc.”
