that of future Lollapalooza festival co-founder Marc Geiger, who helped broaden the venue’s musical menu.

“Booking Jimmy Buffett in 1984 was a major turning point,” recalled Geiger, who in 1984 moved to Los Angeles.

He was replaced by former rock singer and music critic Kenny Weissberg. With key initial mentorship from Geiger, Weissberg was instrumental in expanding Humphreys from a pop-jazz-fueled series into a showcase for national and international rock, blues, pop, folk and World Music artists.

Weissberg, who booked everyone from Roy Orbison and Fats Domino to George Carlin and Buena Vista Social Club, guided Humphreys until he retired in 2006. Wojas has booked the series for the past 15 years, bringing in such artists as Stevie Wonder, Robert Plant and Dolly Parton.

“Marc Geiger was a visionary who saw the potential in Humphreys that no one else saw,” Bartell said. “Kenny was instrumental in putting us on the map as one of the top venues in the nation. And John has taken Humphreys to the next level.

“The biggest present we can give ourselves for our belated 40th anniversary is that we are still here. We survived and are planning to have a great concert season.”
