Highlights from the high school season’s first week, including a first win for RBV coach.

Shane Graham had to wade through a COVID-19 shortened season before he got his first victory as a head football coach.

Friday night, his Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns rewarded the second-year coach with a 32-0 opening-game win over Castle Park.

RBV was 0-5 last season and 1-9 in 2019. This was only the second RBV win since 2018, going 1-14 in that stretch.

And it was the first openingwee­k win for the ‘Horns since beating Irvine 40-37 in 2017.

Quarterbac­k Connor Underhill led the RBV offense, completing 8 of 13 passes for 167 yards and a TD. He also had a 20-yard TD run.

No. 1 Cathedral Catholic 28, No. 8 Torrey Pines 14: Lucky Sutton rushed for 148 yards on 12 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown for Cathedral Catholic. Cathedral bolted to a 28-0 lead, one of the scores coming on a blocked punt. Torrey Pines forced 5 turnovers, including 2 intercepti­ons by Wyatt Gardner.

No. 2 Carlsbad 35, Great Oak 14: Sophomore QB Julian Sayin completed 17 of 26 passes for 352 yards and 3 TDS. Josh Davis had 6 catches for 165 yards and 2 TDS. Anthony Ferrelli had 15 tackles. Carlsbad has won 5 straight season openers, outscoring its opponents 209-41.

No. 3 Mission Hills 24, Chaparral 13: Mission Hills QB Gunnar Hensley hit Matt Martin with a 10-yard scoring pass and ran 5 yards for another score. Jaiden Letua had a 4-yard TD run. Johnny Reyes had a 49yard FG. Peter Eyabi had 3 sacks for the Grizzlies, who trailed 13-10 at the half.

No. 4 Lincoln 49, Monte Vista 0: Lincoln took to the air behind transfer quarterbac­k Jalen Daniels. He completed 7 of 12 passes for 241 yards and 5 TDS. He also rushed 4 times for 62 yards and 2 TDS. WR-DB Jalil Tucker of Lincoln, one of the state’s highest-rated recruits, tweeted that he committed to Oregon on Saturday.

No. 5 El Camino 21, No. 7

St. Augustine 13: El Camino sophomore Devin Cerda stepped in to carry 24 times for 71 yards. Lineman Pe’a Tausulu had 8 carries for 33 yards and a TD and had a sack. QB Kiah Reid had a pair of rushing TDS and threw for 147 yards. Marquis Bell and Caleb Stewart had intercepti­ons.

No. 6 Eastlake 10, Steele Canyon 6: Trey White scored on a 13-yard run, and Kalen Jones booted a 35-yard field goal for Eastlake, which also got 2 intercepti­ons from Jayden Cortell. Steele Canyon’s score came on a 25-yard intercepti­on return by Spencer Campillo, who also had 6 tackles and a sack. Davis Langfeldt had a spectacula­r one-handed intercepti­on near the goal line.

No. 9 Mater Dei Catholic 53, Brawley 21: Dominic Nankil passed for 378 yards and 5 TDS, completing 15 of 25 passes with 4 going to Jerry Mcclure for 148 yards and a pair of scores. Nico Mosley rushed for 158 yards on 6 carries and 3 TDS. Anthony Mcmillan Jr. added 150 yards on 6 carries and a score.

No. 10 La Jolla 42, Bishop’s 3: La Jolla QB Jackson Stratton completed 22 of 38 passes for 364 yards and 4 TDS, plus rushed for a score. Mason Powers, Ryan Weinberg and Austin Bale combined for 16 catches for 291 yards and 4 TDS.

Tesoro 17, La Costa Canyon 7: LCC led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 10-7 at the half. The Mavericks gave up 353 yards, 272 passing.

San Clemente 38, Oceanside 0: This was the first time the Pirates have been blanked in an opener since a 20-0 loss to Anaheim Servite in 2011. RB Dayne Morrison was a bright spot with 20 carries for 160 yards.

Escondido Charter 55, Anza Hamilton 0: Danny Lopez had a pair of intercepti­ons, Noah Reyes had 4 sacks and 3 tackles for a loss and John Scates had an intercepti­on and scored an offensive TD for the White Tigers.

Ramona 19, Point Loma 14: Ramona scored on short runs by Cash Jones and Kyle Willford and on a 33-yard pass from QB Devin Sobczak to Gabriel Lutz. Brandon Smith and Kyle Patenaude had intercepti­ons, Patenaude’s sealed the win in the game’s dying moments.

Scripps Ranch 56, San Pasqual 20: Scripps Ranch made its first game against San Pasqual a historic one. The Falcons scored the most points against an Eagles team since the inaugural season in 1972 when Vista beat San Pasqual 77-0. Scripps Ranch rolled up 453 total yards.

Santa Fe Christian 38, Valley Center 21:

Quarterbac­k Thomas Greupner was 6 of 11

passing for 126 yards and a TD while Santa Fe Christian rushed for 200 yards. Lucas Sinohui led Valley Center with 23 carries for 137 yards and 3 TDS.

Del Norte 54, Escondido 6: This was the second highest scoring game for Del Norte in school history. Only a 56-6 win over Horizon was higher. Freshman Ty Olsen returned a kickoff 52 yards for a TD for the Nighthawks. Del Norte QB Jack Schneider had a school-record 4 TDS.

Mountain Empire 51, Maranatha Christian 0: Larry Clark rushed 10 times for 116 yards and Cody Whitehead had 14 carries for 132 yards for Mountain Empire. Each scored 2 TDS.

Westview 14, Olympian 13:

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Wolverines.

Granite Hills 14, Poway 10: Zak Darling ran for a 16-yard TD with 2:16 left to lift Granite Hills. After a Corey Thompson intercepti­on, Nico Tomasello tossed a 19-yard TD pass to Derek Edmund for the first score.

Mt. Carmel 33, Central Union 17: QB Cayden Gent was 24 of 34 passing for 239 yards and 3 TDS for Mt. Carmel. Luke Sevier had 9 catches for 86 yards and a TD while sophomore Conor Bananal caught 2 TD passes.

Parker 7, Tri-city Christian

0: Gervy Alota scored on a 2-yard run in the final minute of the third quarter and Christophe­r Williams kicked the conversion in Stephen Cooper’s debut as head coach for Parker.

Rancho Bernardo 33, San Marcos 22: Frankie Franchina carried 21 times for 178 yards and a TD for the Broncos. Kaden Vonhout had 60-yard TD run for San Marcos and Brayden Wellong had a 13-yard TD catch.

Army-navy 36, Foothills Christian 0: Tobey Brill rushed for 4 TDS as the Warriors snapped Foothills Christian’s 17-game winning streak in Foothills’ first game in 11-man football game.

Mar Vista 28, Crawford 7: Dante Pacheco scored on TD receptions of 15 yards from Aleks Wojcik and 60 yards from Jordan Mahan as coach Syd Reed won his Mar Vista debut Thursday. Mohamed Mohamed led Crawford’s defense with 3 sacks. Joseph Minchello had 9 tackles for the Colts.

San Ysidro 52, Clairemont

0: The San Ysidro defense allowed just 3 first downs and 2 were by penalty.

Otay Ranch 19, Madison 14: For the third straight season, Otay Ranch opened with an impressive victory, this time on the road against traditiona­l City Conference power Madison.

Westview 14, Olympian 13:

Olympian sophomore Jacob Marichal caught 6 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in his varsity debut.

Valhalla 14, Hilltop 8:

Andrew Cornthwait­e caught 4 passes for 104 yards from Tommy Logan, including a 45-yard TD to lift Valhalla. Andrew’s younger brother, Aidan, had a key intercepti­on, a pass defense in the end zone and several big hits.

Morse 38, Bonita Vista 13:

Nathan Roble-cristobal passed for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns but was also picked off four times as Bonita Vista, which led 13-0 after the first quarter, couldn’t get the offense untracked.

Grossmont 37, Sweetwater 14: Senior Ryan Rodieck caught TD passes of 30, 15 and 39 yards from senior Trenton Giles, and Rodieck also threw a 45-yard TD to Jawad Rivera to

give Chris Holmes a victory in his debut as head coach at Grossmont.

Mission Bay 48, El Cajon Valley 0: Mission Bay QB Clash Orsborn got his senior season off to an impressive start, completing 13 of 15 passes for 306 yards and 5 TDS, plus rushed for a score.

Patrick Henry 42, Mount Miguel 7:

Tabias Harris gained 119 yards on 16 carries, scoring 3 TDS for Henry.

Santana 10, Coronado 7 (OT): Scoreless in the fourth quarter, Coronado got a 23yard TD pass, but Santana followed with a 92-yard kickoff return by Dylan Anderson, who also had an intercepti­on. In OT, Santana held on downs and then got a 24-yard FG by Jackson Scott to win it.

Helix 28, Mira Mesa 20: Helix’s Christian Washington rushed 17 times for 202 yards and 3 TDS, plus added 3 catches for 31 yards and 70 yards on 2 kick returns. Adren Parker had a key intercepti­on.

Morse 38, Bonita Vista 13:

Morse’s vaunted ground game, behind Damarian Wright and Jamari Jorden, led the Tigers to the win.

San Diego 55, Vincent Memorial 8:

San Diego scored 50 or more points three times in the 2019 season and hit the half-century mark again.

University City 48, Fallbrook 7: With Lincoln transfer Samuel Cooper IV throwing for multiple touchdown passes, UC won its first game under new coach Paul Lawrence. Reese Holmes scored for Fallbrook.

El Capitan 46, Canyon Hills 12:

El Capitan’s Savigon Yokley accounted for 6 TDS to spoil the christenin­g of Canyon Hills’ start with a new school name.

Vista 46, Paloma Valley 8:

Vista QB Russell Chavez completed 13 of 14 passes for 165 yards and 2 scores.

Temescal Canyon 41, La Jolla Country Day 33:

LJCD QB Bito Bass-sulpizo threw for 493 yards and 5 TDS, 3 to Mondo Nishiba.
