National City seeks volunteers for boards
National City has several openings for volunteers to serve on city commissions. They include: Civil Service, Housing Advisory, Library, Park, Recreation & Seniors, Art, Traffic & Safety, and Vets & Military Families. Find application forms and details at https://bit.ly/3fj6ykn. Free cooking field kit for Imperial Beach families
Suncoast Market Co-op is partnering with The Ecology Center to distribute 100 Field Kits to elementary or middle school students who want to cook or learn more about local farming. The kits are donated by The Chuck and Ernestina Kreutzkamp Foundation and are free to Imperial Beach families experiencing financial hardship. Kits must be reserved in advance and picked up from 9-10 a.m. Thursday. The Field Kit is a recipe and activity box, not a food distribution box, that includes items needed to make a meal of black bean tacos and salsa. Register to pick up a kit at https://bit.ly/3slcttg.
Imperial Beach hosts community picnic
Veterans Park is the site for a free community picnic at 5 p.m. Thursday hosted by the city of Imperial Beach. City staff will present information on IB’S clean and safe neighborhood program kickoff, enabled when residents passed Measure I in 2020. Bring chairs or blankets; the city will provide food. Staff from other agencies will also be there, including the Sheriff’s Dept., lifeguard and fire departments, Humane Society, YMCA Camp Surf and the Parks and Rec Dept. The county will also provide info on rental assistance. Veterans Park is at 1075 Eighth St.
Sharp benefit dinner and regatta coming up
The annual Sharp Hospicecare Benefit Dinner and Regatta will be held Friday and Saturday in San Diego Bay. Co-hosted with the Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association, the event will support Sharp Hospicecare’s Homes for Hospice program, which gives patients a comfortable home setting to receive care. The event starts at 6 p.m. Friday with an outdoor pre-race dinner and silent auction at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. Tickets are $225 and include dancing and silent auction. At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, guests will board yachts at the Coronado Yacht Club and cruise the racecourse. Tickets are $150 and include lunch, refreshments and post-race dinner. Association hosts ‘summer stroll’ next week
The TAVA (Third Avenue Village Association) invites the community to enjoy a Summer Stroll, a socially distanced outdoor walkabout highlighting the businesses along Third Ave. in Chula Vista. Bank awards grants to two nonprofits
Accessity (formerly Accion San Diego) and Union of Pan Asian Communities in San Diego were recently awarded Community Reinvestment Act grants totaling $15,000 from City National Bank. The funds will help these programs meet the needs of businesses and people throughout the community. Accessity’s mission is to help entrepreneurs of color, women and immigrants so they can build businesses and livelihoods. The nonprofit Union of Pan Asian Communities provides health and human services to underserved diverse populations. Programs focus on mental health counseling, community engagement and business development, addiction treatment and health.
