ESCONDIDO, CA — Sidney Hollins, beloved husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather and friend to so many, passed away on September 14, 2021 at the age of 93. Sid was a passionate life-long supporter of his beloved City of Escondido.

While Sid was a young teenager his father Pearlie and mother Pearl, his sister and two brothers, planted deep roots in the young town of Escondido after his family moved from a dirt floor home in Browns Hole, Wyoming. Originally the family resided in Pennsylvania where Sid was born.

Sid attended Escondido High School where he made life-long friends. After graduation he enlisted in the Army where he served an 18-month tour in Germany as part of the occupation force after World War II. Upon returning to California, with the help of the GI Bill, he attended Palomar College and San Diego State University. He graduated with degrees in Business Management, Elementary School Administration as well as earning a teaching credential.

He began his career in education as a teacher in the Escondido Union Elementary School District and eventually served as Principal at both Felicita and Oak Hill Schools. Later he moved to administrative positions where he served as the Director of Certified Personnel and Deputy School Superintendent. He also served as Interim School Superintendent.

After retirement, Sid was elected to the School Board of the Escondido Union Elementary School District where he served for five years.

In 1990 Sid was elected to the City Council of the City of Escondido where he served for eight years, the last four as Mayor.

Sid’s second retirement found him engaged in woodworking projects, playing tennis, Poker and Gin Rummy with friends and family. Over the years he and his wife Marion traveled to 35 countries within Europe, Russia, Asia and the Caribbean.

Sid lived his life to the fullest and counted his family and friends as his greatest gifts.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in law, Debbie and Frank Schmitz; his son and daughter-in law, Rick and Ann Hollins; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Their shared memories of Sid’s positive impact on their lives will forever keep his spirit and soul alive.

Sid was a good man and will be missed by all who knew him.

A “Celebration of Life” for Sid will be held by the immediate family.
