SAN DIEGO, CA — Betty Lou Mccarty (Slack) passed away on September 14, 2021 at the age of 92. For those who knew her, they will fondly recall her lovely gardens, her knitting masterpieces and her Irish charm.

A native of Ohio, Betty moved to San Diego in 1949 to rejoin her family who had relocated to San Diego the year prior. Though it was difficult to leave her Buckeye state, San Diego’s weather soon smoothed things over. She began attending San Diego State College where she became a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She also met her first husband Dwight L. (Bud) Willis Jr. there. They were married for 10 years and had two children.

Following that marriage, Betty moved to the San Carlos neighborhood where she met the love of her life and future husband Jack O. Mccarty.

They had one daughter together, to join Jack’s two children from a prior marriage along with Betty’s children from her prior marriage. They were happily married for 49 years, Jack having passed away just eight months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Music was a large part of Betty’s life having played the flute and piano in her younger years. In addition to music, she enjoyed crafts, gardening, camping,

knitting, wearing hats of all sorts - especially to the Nutcracker and the Del Mar Racetrack, and just being with family. Christmas Eve gatherings at their Blossom Valley home and Alpine home were legendary.

In addition to being predeceased by her husband, Betty is predeceased by her father James Cline Slack Sr, mother Velma Lucille Slack (Forgey) brother James C. Slack Jr., sister Roberta Joan O’brien (Slack) and son Dwight L Willis III (Ike). She is survived by her stepdaughter Lynn Mccarty (Clay Spence), step-son Brian Mccarty (Colleen) daughter Kerry Leigh Ferguson (Dana) daughter Joni Correia (Joe) along with grandchildren Caitlin Spence, Anthony Spence, John Mccarty, William Mccarty, Elizabeth Ortez, Hayley Ferguson, Tyler Ferguson, Kieran

Ferguson, Devin Way, Jacey Correia and Michael Correia. Betty is also survived by six greatgrandchildren, one niece and three nephews.

Visitation will be held at El Cajon Mortuary on 9/29/21 from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Interment services will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park on 9/30/21 at 12:00 PM.

The family wishes to express our most sincere gratitude for the kindness and expertise shown by everyone at Villa Lorena Assisted Living and Memory Care, Sharphospice and most of all, Betty’s longtime caregiver/friend Carolyn from Carechoice Home Care.

Rest in Peace Mama. We will miss you immensely.
