CSU’S HALFTIME LEAD ON NO. 5 IOWA DOESN’T HOLD UP

-

No. 5 Iowa opened the season with wins against ranked teams Indiana and Iowa State. A home win over Kent State followed.

Then came Saturday’s game against Colorado State, and it turned out to be the biggest challenge so far for the host Hawkeyes.

Spencer Petras threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns as Iowa needed a second-half comeback to win 24-14.

The Hawkeyes (4-0), who trailed at halftime for the first time this season, won their 10th consecutive game, the program’s longest streak since 12 to open the 2015 season. Iowa also has a 15-game nonconference winning streak, the longest current streak in the nation.

The Hawkeyes were pushed by the Rams (1-3), who led 14-7 at halftime.

“We certainly got stressed, which is going to help us,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said.

Iowa rallied with touchdowns on back-to-back possessions that took a combined four plays in the third quarter.

A fumble recovery by Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell at the Colorado State 6yard line set up a touchdown run by wide receiver Tyrone Tracy Jr., on the next play that tied the game. Petras threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to tight end Sam Laporta on the next possession to give Iowa a 21-14 lead.

Petras had his streak of 23 quarters without an interception end in the second quarter when Colorado State cornerback Robert Floyd wrestled away a pass intended for Tracy and returned it 62 yards.

“It hurts,” said Colorado State tight end Trey Mcbride, who led the Rams with six catches for 59 yards. “This was a team we should have beat.”

Boise State 27, Utah State 3: Hank Bachmeier threw for two touchdowns, Boise State’s defense frustrated host Utah State and the Broncos won their 22nd straight conference opener.

Utah State (3-1, 1-1 MW), off to its best start since the 1978 team opened 5-0, finally scored less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Boise State (2-2, 1-0), which has won six straight in the series, had 435 yards of offense.

Air Force 31, Florida Atlantic 7: Haaziq Daniels ran for two early touchdowns, including a 94-yard jaunt, and Air Force scored the game’s first 24 points in a home victory. Air Force (3-1) rushed for 309 yards in the first half and finished with 446.

Wyoming 24, Connecticut 22: Titus Swen scored on a late 2-yard run and visiting Wyoming survived a dramapacked final minutes to eke out a win over Uconn, capping a nearly 2,000-mile road trip to remain undefeated at 4-0.

Western Michigan 23, San Jose State 3: Kaleb Eleby threw for two touchdowns and the Western Michigan (3-1) defense dominated in a big victory over visiting San Jose State (2-2).

Hawaii 41, New Mexico State 21: Chevan Cordeiro threw for a first-half touchdown and ran for a secondhalf score as Hawaii snapped a two-game losing streak with a win at New Mexico State.

Friday’s late game

No. 22 Fresno State 38, UNLV 30: Jake Haener threw four TD passes in the second half to Jalen Cropper and Fresno State (4-1, 1-0 MW) rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat winless UNLV (0-4, 0-1).
