OCEANSIDE, CA — Max Reid Hogan, 92, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021. Max was born on July 1, 1929, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Glen Charles and Clara Elizabeth (Brown) Hogan. He was the second oldest of five children.

He was raised in West Jordan, Utah, where he graduated from Jordan High School and Utah State University with a degree in Dairy Manufactur­ing. He married Hannah Jane (Johnson) on September 25, 1951, together they raised five children. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring from the military as an army Colonel.

Max learned to work hard as a young man, working on the familyowne­d Hogan Dairy, in West Jordan Utah, which continued as a family business until the Dairy was sold in 1963. After the sale of the Dairy and a short work stint working for Meadow Gold Dairy, while not engaged with his active and reserve military responsibi­lities he worked with real estate

Following in his father’s footsteps, Max enjoyed rifle shooting and showed his skill by winning the State of Utah – 22 caliber Open Championsh­ip at the age of fifteen. While attending Utah State University, he continued to demonstrat­e his skills with rifle target shooting as an ROTC student winning many awards, including the State of Utah indoor Championsh­ip. Later, he continued with this target shooting, changing to a pistol, where he continued to win State and National awards, including the State of Utah marksman

championsh­ip.

Getting involved with local government was important to Max, he served on West Jordan’s planning commission for nine years, as a city council member for five and as West Jordan Mayor for four years. He was on the regional council for metropolit­an planning for the Wasatch Front in Utah for three years and appointed to serve on the Regional Transit Committee. Max was known for his ‘future thinking’ approach to government.

At home he enjoyed spending time with the family, and supporting sporting or school activities. His love for flower gardening was evident when he converted a room in the house to an indoor greenhouse after he and Jane were empty nesters.

In 2002, Max and Jane moved to Carlsbad, CA then to Oceanside, CA where he lived until his passing. While in Oceanside, his love for golf really took off. Most days you could find him on the golf course with his golf buddies or outside adding more flowers and plants to his yard.

Not withstandi­ng all of Max’s life achievemen­ts, we feel that he was most importantl­y a fun loving, kind and fair Dad. He was a wonderfull­y supportive, very loving husband to Jane. As a dad and grandpa, he was an amazing teacher of life lessons, so generous and very dearly loved.

He will be missed for his sweet demeanor, his intelligen­ce, his fantastic sense of humor and his profound integrity.

He is survived by four of his children Terry (Tom), Scott (Kim), Jeff (Becky), Brian (Scott), daughter-in-law Renee, seven grandchild­ren and nineteen greatgrand­children, brothers Keith and Richard. Preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jane, oldest son Glen, brother Dimar, and sister Caroline Crawford.

A ‘Celebrator­y Service’ will be held for immediate family, in Oceanside, CA.
