June 23, 1943 - December 26, 2021

SAN DIEGO — On Sunday, December 26th, Barry Mccauley Nally, surrounded by family, passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 78.

Barry was born June 23, 1943, in Portland, Maine. He and his younger brother Pat grew up primarily in Houston, Texas. In 1961, after graduating high school, Barry joined the Navy and was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. It was here that he met the love of his life, Georgia Smock, and in 1964, just six short months of dating, the two were married. He welcomed his first daughter, Bridgett, in 1965. Soon after her birth, he served as a Hospital Corpsman on the USS Sanctuary off the coast of Vietnam, caring for wounded service members. It is here that he earned the name “Doc”. In 1967, he welcomed his second daughter, Holly.

Barry and family eventually were stationed in San Diego, where he finished his military career in 1983. Throughout that time, he earned the Navy Unit Commendation, Battle “E”, Good Conduct with 4 stars, National Defense Service, The Vietnam Service with 1 star, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Campaign award.

His sense of humor and his effervescent smile remained intact until his last days. His only wish was to make everyone laugh. For many, he will be remembered for his jokes, and his passion for golf. Barry was quite the player, and he never missed an opportunity to fish out golf balls from water hazards. Whether he was playing or watching golf on tv, it truly was his favorite thing to do.

Barry had a love for life, family, and the church. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus at San Rafael Catholic Church, where he was always willing to volunteer for anything.

Barry is survived by his younger brothers, Pat and Steven Nally; daughter Bridgett and her husband Craig Brown, daughter Holly and her husband Jon Savage. He was also the proud grandfather of Leah Mcbride (34), Jordan Brown (33), Renny Savage (20), and Lenny Savage (16) and a loving “Baz” to Bailey Mcbride (4).

Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral service for Barry at San Rafael Catholic Church in Rancho Bernardo Friday, January 28th at 1:00pm, with a reception following at Bernardo Heights Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, it was Barry’s request that donations be made to: Knights of Columbus Charities #9710, San Rafael Catholic Church, 17252 Bernardo Center Drive, San Diego, CA 92128.
