GROSSMONT, CUYAMACA HOLD BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS

Throughout February, El Cajon’s Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges are putting on workshops, music performanc­es, literature readings and an art exhibit to celebrate Black History Month.

The free online and inperson community events honor the legacies, traditions and contributi­ons of Black Americans.

Cuyamaca College’s events can be accessed on the Student Affairs website at cuyamaca.edu/studentsup­port/student-affairs/culture-community-circle.php.

Grossmont College’s inperson events will be open only to the campus commu• nity because of COVID-19 protocols, but will be accessible to everyone through livestream viewing on the Grossmont College Youtube channel or tinyurl.com/ mtkpx588.

Here’s the lineup of events at each of the community colleges:

Cuyamaca College

• The Sounds of Blackness: College Hour Program, presented by Kendrick Dial and Brisa Lauren, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday featuring Lyrical Groove, a local award-winning soul, gospel, hip-hop and spoken-word band, livestream­ed from the Cuyamaca College Theater.

• Open Mic, 2 p.m. Feb. 16 to share your work or interests.

Barriers to being a First-generation Black College Student workshop, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 17.

• In His Words: Dissecting Truth, Justice and Martin Luther King Jr. presentati­on, 11 a.m. to noon Feb. 23 led by Yaa Faraji, a Los Angeles screenwrit­er, spoken word, poet and author.

• African American Soldiers in Philippine American War (1899-1902) workshop, 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 25.

• Mental Health Stigma in the Black Community workshop with discussion, noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 28.

Grossmont College

• Sound Bites – Rap and

Hip Hop and the World series with discussion, noon weekdays through Feb. 28 on history of rap music. Register at tinyurl.com/ myyb8ybe.

• Afro-latinx Connection, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 17.

• African and African American Art Display, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 21-25 at Hyde Gallery in the Performing and Visual Arts Center, by appointmen­t only at alex.decosta@gcccd.edu.

• Black History Month Celebratio­n, 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 22, followed by African American Lit Readings, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Main Quad.
