SAN DIEGO, CA — Lois Baker, passed away on January 23, 2022, due to age related illness, just shy of her 91st birthday. In a true Circle of Life, Lois’ youngest great-grandson was born just hours before her passing.

Lois, a native San Diegan was born in Oceanside, CA and grew up in Fallbrook. She was the youngest child of Bill and Lois Anderson. Lois spent her early years outdoors roaming the ranch in Fallbrook with her older brother, Grant. The ranch was sold when Lois was a teen and her family moved to La Jolla and then to Point Loma.

Lois graduated from Point Loma High School in 1948. During high school Lois met her husband-to-be, Daniel Baker, who attended St. Augustine High School. They met at a party of a mutual friend in Mission Beach. Dan and Lois married in 1950. Both Dan and Lois graduated from San Diego State College where Lois obtained a degree in education and her teaching credential. Lois’ first teaching job was at Frontier Elementary School located off Midway Drive in Point Loma. Lois furthered her education and received her master’s degree in special education. She taught second grade and special education at Kit Carson Elementary School in Linda Vista for many years.

Dan and Lois raised their two daughters, Leslie and Kathy, in Point Loma. Lois was active in many clubs including Makua, Bridge, Pi Beta Phi, Investment Club, Point Loma Association, Point Loma

Assembly, Wednesday Club and more. Lois so enjoyed her time with Wednesday Club and served on the board for several years. Lois served on the San Diego County Grand Jury in the 1980’s.

Dan and Lois had a rich social life filled with treasured friendships. They traveled the world on their own and with friends. Both Dan and Lois cherished their five grandchildren and were “hands on” grandparents. Each grandchild was loved and cherished.

Lois was predeceased by her husband, Dan in 2017, and her daughter Kathleen Hibbets in 2012. She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Harrington of Point Loma; her grandchildren Blake Harrington (Michelle) of San Jose del Cabo; Todd Harrington of Pinehurst, NC; Ross Harrington (Rachael) of Point Loma; Jim Oliver (Lindsay) of Virginia Beach; Shannon Leyko (Aaron) of Virginia Beach but stationed across the country with the Coast Guard; and nine great-grandchildren.

We will miss Lois’ opinions. As she said, “often wrong but never in doubt” – she was most often right. We will miss her incredible work ethic, always planning an interesting outing, correcting our grammar, the beautiful, and healthy, meals she enjoyed preparing for us, and her willingness to always help.

Our profound thanks to the staff at Activcare Mission Bay for providing compassionate care and comfort in Lois’ final days and throughout her stay.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the

Bali Hai Restaurant in Point Loma on March 27th, 4:00PM – 7:00PM. Memorial donations may be made to The San Diego Foundation Daniel and Lois Baker Scholarship Fund c/o The San Diego Foundation: 2508 Historic Decatur Rd., Ste 200, San Diego, CA 92106
