ESCONDIDO — Mark Hubbard Wollam, a long time avocado and flower farmer in North County, San Diego died unexpected­ly from natural causes at his home on Sunday afternoon, February 27, 2022 at the age of 72.

Mark is survived by his three sons Frank, Mark, and Robert; His five grandchild­ren Mia, Adam, Colin, Ronan, and Taylor Wollam; and his siblings Guy Wollam, Wendy Scherrer, and Nan Deane.

Mark was born on June 24, 1949 in Southampto­n, NY to Wendell and Marie Wollam. The son of a minister and a school teacher, the family moved to Redlands, CA where Mark attended middle and high schools. Mark went on to obtain his degree in Agricultur­e Business from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and settled in San Diego’s North County, where he was an active member of the farming community for nearly 50 years years. Mark was introduced by friends to Nicolasa Castro Collins, who he married in 1977. Together they raised their three sons, farmed, and made a life in the rural backcountr­y of Northern San Diego County, enjoying the stunning sunsets and beautiful views from their ranch. Nicolasa (Nikki), who suffered from Lupus, passed away suddenly in 2013.

Throughout his life Mark’s compassion, generosity, and work ethic were an example to those around him. His keen insights, extensive knowledge of the area, and outgoing personalit­y made him a pillar of the farming community.

Mark’s presence loomed large in the lives of the people around him, a constant source of wisdom and strength, he was always there to help shoulder the burden of others. Mark enjoyed being outdoors, walking his ranches, fishing, and hiking. He was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends and always wished the best for everyone.

Later in life Mark struggled with Parkinson’s disease, but he continued to play an important role in the family business, Wollam Grove Management, that he establishe­d in 1973, and operated with his oldest son Frank up until his death.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 12th at 11:00 am at the First Congregati­onal Church of Escondido, 1800 North Broadway, Escondido, CA 92026.

Donations in Mark’s name can be made to the Interfaith Community Services Center, located at 550 W. Washington Ave. Escondido, CA 92025, whose mission of servicing the distressed members of society resonated with his core beliefs.
