Padres 2, Cubs 2

-

The Padres and Cubs tied on Saturday at Peoria Stadium.

Batter’s box: Luke Voit launched a home run almost to the giant video board atop the grassy knoll beyond left field, his first home run of the spring. Voit also singled and is 3-for-10 with two walks this spring. … CJ Abrams was 1-for-3 and is 6-for-17 this spring. The organization’s top prospect is 4-for-9 against pitchers with MLB experience. Both of his home runs have come against minor leaguers. … Catcher Victor Caratini doubled off the center field wall. … Infielder Eguy Rosario, the organization’s seventh-ranked prospect, was 2-for-2.

Balls and strikes: Left-hander Ryan Weathers overcame some fastball command trouble to get through three innings on 37 pitches. He allowed an unearned run on one hit and two walks and struck out three. Weathers is ostensibly a candidate to be in the rotation but would also be valuable covering multiple innings out of the bullpen. … Emilio Pagan allowed his first baserunners of the spring, on a walk and a double, while pitching his third scoreless inning. … Kevin Kopps, the team’s third-round pick in 2021, also worked a third scoreless inning.

Extra bases: Third baseman Manny Machado was scratched from the lineup due to back tightness. Manager Bob Melvin said the injury “was more a sleeping thing” and “not something he did on the field.” Melvin said Machado could be back playing as early as today. “We have plenty of time,” Melvin said. “He’s a guy I just don’t want to push.” … Left fielder Jurickson Profar and shortstop Jackson Merrill turned a perfect relay to throw out Alfonso Rivas trying to score to end the top of the sixth inning. Merrill was the Padres’ first pick (27th overall) in last year’s draft.

On deck: Right-hander Yu Darvish makes his second start of the spring, against the Guardians, 1:10 p.m. at Peoria Stadium.
