Elinor Sypniewski Mone
October 3, 1935 - January 31, 2022
SAN DIEGO, CA — Elinor Sypniewski Mone was born into this world on October 3rd, 1935 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She was the ninth and youngest child of two Polish immigrants, Roman and Constance Sypniewski.
An honor student, Elinor graduated from Jamaica High School in Queens, New York in the year 1953 before meriting her nursing degree in 1956. Elinor was a practicing nurse for 55 years, during which she received the ‘Psychiatric Nurse of the Year’ award in 1999; one of her greatest accomplishments. In 2011, she retired as a Clinical Nurse 3 from Sharp Mesa Vista hospital in San Diego, California.
Elinor’s most relished commitment was to the love of her life, Lou Mone, whose acquaintance she had made through a mutual friend on December 28th, 1957. Inseparably so, they were engaged on April 1st of the next year and married 9 months later to date, on Sept. 28th,1958. She and her husband built a beautiful family with the birth of their son Marc in 1959 and daughter Lisa in 1961.
Elinor had an eclectic taste for art, culture, travel and music; much of which she embodied through her vibrant aesthetic and savvy persona. She made many memories with her family and friends aboard their boat, accurately named ‘Babe’, after Elinor herself. She won the hearts of all she met and the stomachs of all who gathered round. Cooking was an esteemed passion of hers.
Undisputedly so, Elinor was a compassionate woman by nature. When not taking on the role of a selfless caregiver, as much at home as with her patients, Elinor was a brave activist across many unjust platforms. If she wasn’t knitting her famous ‘pussy caps’ to advocate for women’s rights or taking to the streets to march for equality, Elinor was dedicated to championing a better life for all. Most notably through her involvement in many political campaigns and exercisable right to vote. An exemplary human and retired clinical nurse, Elinor Mone’s love of life didn’t come to an end with her death. Elinor died on January 31st, 2022 at the age of 86 after a valiant, 22-year battle with various cancers; ultimately succumbing to lung cancer, while surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Elinor is survived, but not forgotten by, her husband of 63 years Lou, her two children Marc and Lisa, her three grandchildren Zac, Mackenzie and Brock, and her great grandchildren among countless other friends and family who will carry her in their hearts forever.
