ARREST MADE IN SHOOTING DEATH OF MAN

-

San Diego homicide detectives arrested a 20-yearold man Friday on suspicion that he shot and killed a homeless man early Thursday in City Heights.

Antwan Jbyrd Quiroz is suspected of slaying 35year-old Abdirisaq Ahmed around 12:30 a.m. in the Chollas Creek area of City Heights, San Diego police homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said.

The shooting occurred on 50th Street near Wightman Street, where police officers responding to reports of gunfire found Ahmed on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Campbell said in a news release. Ahmed died at a hospital.

Police did not say what may have led up to the shooting. But Campbell said investigators identified Quiroz as the suspect and arrested him around 2:15 p.m. Friday on 50th Street near Sterling Court, a few blocks from where the shooting occurred.

Quiroz was booked Friday evening into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail.

Suspect sought in slaying of woman, 87

Police on Saturday were still searching for the man who killed an 87-year-old woman and critically injured her 59-year-old daughter in stabbings at their Mira Mesa home a day earlier.

A 911 caller reported the assault to police just before 3 p.m. Friday on Pagoda Way. The caller — police did not say who made the call — told police that multiple people were stabbed, Officer Darius Jamsetjee said.

The older woman died at the scene, homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said in a news release. Paramedics took her daughter to a hospital where she was in critical condition Friday night. An update on her condition was not available Saturday.

Police have not yet released the victims’ names.

Homicide detectives were working to determine whether the women were targeted or attacked at random, Campbell said.

He described the killer as a White or Hispanic man in his 40s or 50s. He stood between 6 feet and 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a maroon shirt and blue jeans, and he may have left the area in a small, gray SUV with out-of-state license plates.

Anyone with information about the stabbing or the identity of the suspect was asked to call the homicide unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip line at (888) 5808477.

Man, 44, shot during argument

A 44-year-old man was shot in the back and wounded late Friday in the Rolando area, San Diego police said.

An argument ensued and one of the men fired several gunshots, striking the victim. He was taken to a hospital and expected to survive his injuries, police said.

The assailants ran back to their car and drove away. Police did not have a description of the men.

Girl, 15, re-arrested in stabbing of other girl

A 15-year-old girl who was arrested and then released following the alleged hate crime stabbing of a teenage girl last weekend has been re-arrested on new charges after the investigation uncovered that she played a larger role in the attack than initially believed, sheriff’s officials said late Friday.

The suspect, whose name was not released because she is a minor, surrendered to deputies at the Lakeside Sheriff’s Substation shortly after a warrant was issued for her arrest, said Lt. Shawn Wray. She was booked into Juvenile Hall on attempted murder and hate crime charges.

She is believed to be the girlfriend of the 16-year-old boy who is already in custody, sheriff’s officials have said.

The attack happened April 16 just after 11 p.m. at an apartment complex on Mapleview Street in Lakeside. Sheriff’s officials said the boy, who was with a group of people, confronted the 16-year-old victim, who is Black, and her family and shouted racial slurs at them. During an ensuing scuffle, the boy allegedly stabbed the victim twice in the back.

The victim had to be hospitalized for her wounds.

Deputies arrested the 15year-old girl on suspicion of brandishing a weapon in the attack, but she was later released to the custody of her guardian.

“Based on new information and witness statements in the ongoing investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives found the 15-year-old female juvenile suspect had a larger role in the attack than initially believed,” Wray said in a news release Friday night.

The boy was arrested Monday and pleaded not guilty Thursday in Juvenile Court to charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Both charges carry hate crime allegations.

The District Attorney’s Office said the investigation is ongoing into whether charges will be filed against “other individuals involved” in the attack.

An anti-hate crime rally was held in Lakeside Saturday evening to call for the arrests of others involved.
