LA JOLLA — Kathleen Fleming Bregante passed on March 26th at her home, surrounded by family, after a short illness. She was born on December 4, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was the last and eldest surviving of three siblings (Carol Garroutte and Ted Fleming). She is survived by her children, Christina Swift, Julianne Velasco, Anthony T. Bregante, Paul Bregante, and her 10 grandchild­ren.

She grew up in La Jolla and cherished her days at Stella Maris Academy and Our Lady of Peace High School. There she competed in basketball and swimming and met lifelong friends. In her teen years, she fell in love with horses and competed in western horsemansh­ip. Upon graduation, she felt a “calling” to her faith and joined the convent at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Santa Monica, California. As a Sister of Saint Joseph of Carondelet, she majored in History and became an Elementary school English teacher. Shortly thereafter, she left the convent and met the love of her life, Anthony C. Bregante. Together they built their dream home and raised four children, where she remained a committed mother and grandmothe­r. “Gaga,” named by her grandchild­ren, always lived her life to the fullest. NFL Draft day, Fantasy Football, the Del Mar races, and PGA Golf were some of her favorite events. She showed encouragem­ent and support to all her grandkids at their baseball and basketball games, CYT plays,

Irish dance and Taekwondo competitio­ns and surfing. Kathy took pride in her charity work with the Juniors of Social Service Auxiliary and National Charity League, and the VA hospital. She enjoyed her time at multiple church communitie­s; Our Mother of Confidence, All Hallows, and Mary Star of the Sea.

She loved singing in the choir, bible studies, cooking dinners for the priests, and creating flower arrangemen­ts. Her friendly and fun personalit­y was magnetic and appreciate­d by many. Her never-ending love for her faith and family will never be forgotten.

Her funeral service will be held Friday, May 6th at 1:30PM at Mary Star of the Sea Church in La Jolla.

In lieu of flowers, her family would like donations to be made in the name of Kathy Bregante to Mary Star of the Sea Church.
