Family-owned Lawrance Furniture celebrates 85th year in business
San Diego-based Lawrance Furniture is celebrating its 85th year in business and is now in its’ fourth generation of family ownership.
The business was founded in 1937 by Sadie and Herman Haimsohn and was then called Modern Furniture Company. The name changed in 1981.
The store was originally located in downtown San Diego as a typical general furniture store and in 1941 moved to its current location at 7th & University Avenue in Hillcrest.
When the next generation, Edward “Ed” Haimsohn, took over in the early to mid-1950’s, the business was transformed into a true modern furniture specialty retailer. Haimsohn sought out the best suppliers for quality modern furniture in Southern California and nationally and was one of the first furniture merchants to travel to Europe to seek out great modern designs from Denmark, Italy, and Germany.
Today, Lawrance Furniture is owned and operated by the third generation, Julie and Howard Haimsohn, along with fourth generation family members, Joel Haimsohn and Bethany Delconte.
A second location opened in Encinitas in 1981 and the family continues to carry on the tradition of procuring the best in contemporary and modern home furnishings for its two showrooms. Furnishing are predominately sourced from the U.S., Europe, and Canada. The company leverages its buying strength through Contemporary Design Group, a consortium of 28 independent retailers, founded by Howard and Ed Haimsohn in 1983.
In each of their locations Lawrance Furniture has a strong design team with a passion for helping their clients create beautiful complete rooms and even entire home projects.
