DOUBLE-A: DOUBLE NO-NO’S

- BY JEFF SANDERS

After four pitchers combined for a no-hitter at Double-a San Antonio, Phillip Wellman had copies of the lineup printed up for each of the Missions to savor.

“This doesn’t happen very often,” Wellman told the team. “Treasure it. Give it to your mom.”

What does Wellman know?

Three days after four pitchers combined for a nohitter, four different pitchers teamed up for another in a 4-0 win over visiting Midland on Wednesday night.

This time, right-hander Ryan Lillie (3.29 ERA) started the game with four strikeouts and a walk over four innings, followed by two shutout innings from righthander Michel Baez (1-0, 0.00), two more scoreless innings from left-hander Osvaldo Hernandez (6.91) and one more scoreless frame from Mason Fox (3.86).

Wellman said he first realized the staff hadn’t given up a hit after Baez’s two-inning, five-strikeout stint, his first in the Texas League after beginning his Tommy John rehab assignment with 72⁄3 innings of one-run ball at low Single-a Lake Elsinore.

The no-no was still intact after Fox issued a leadoff walk in the ninth because he immediately induced a double play ball. The third and final out arrived on a ground ball to second baseman Chris Given, who threw to first baseman Yorman Rodriguez to set off a second celebration on the mound in four days.

Catcher Juan Fernandez caught this no-hitter, the 16th in Missions history.

Four days earlier, it was Chandler Seagle catching Lake Bachar for three innings in his first start back from Tommy John surgery, followed by Moises Lugo (3), Carlos Belen (2) and Kevin Kopps (1).

“It was even more special that it was four guys that did it,” Wellman said. “That’s

extremely difficult to have four guys do it and then we did it again with four different guys.

“It’s about time you think you have this game figured out that baseball throws you the nastiest pitch you’ve ever seen.”

Mears to developmental list

The Padres are resetting Joshua Mears in extended spring training in Peoria, Ariz.

The 21-year-old outfielder has eight home runs at high Single-a Fort Wayne, one off the system lead, but he’s striking out in 44.1 percent of his plate appearances and hitting .185 on the season.

Mears has a trio of twohomer games, the last on April 23. Since then, he is hitting .102/.239/.170 with 35 strikeouts in 18 games.
