Art, unique cinema outings share top billing on this week’s to-do list

Art, film and adult beverages are on the table this week if you’re looking for fun activities happening around the region. Check out these upcoming events.

New abstract expression­ist exhibition at Art Scene West

Art Scene West Gallery is opening a new exhibition of abstract expression­ist mixed-media artworks by local artist Janet Perkin on Saturday at its space in the Solana Beach Arts District.

Perkin’s style is influenced by artists like Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Andre Derain and Gustav Klimt, with vibrant color and strong messages. Using acrylic paint and collage, she weaves a story to connect with the viewer.

An award-winning artist recognized by the National Collage Society, Perkin’s artwork was featured in the society’s annual calendar for three consecutiv­e years. Her pieces are exhibited in galleries, corporate offices and homes across the U.S. and Europe.

A free opening reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at the gallery, 312 South Cedros Ave., Suite 130.

Internatio­nal Vegan Film Festival comes to San Diego

On Wednesday and Thursday, Cinema Under The Stars will host the Internatio­nal Vegan Film Festival and dinner at 4040 Goldfinch, San Diego. Starting at 8 p.m., the two-hour festival features a unique selection of short films focused on vegan subjects from filmmakers all over the world.

This is the festival’s fourth year since it launched in 2018 as a notfor-profit event centered on “a healthier, more compassion­ate, environmen­tally-friendly lifestyle that can be achieved through the consumptio­n of plants and animal-free alternativ­es,” according to the event website.

Rooftop Cinema Club has ‘10 Things I Hate About You’

Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcader­o in San Diego will host a screening of the 1999 romantic comedy, “10 Things I Hate About You,” at 8 p.m. Friday. Directed by Gil Junger and starring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-levitt, the PG-13 film is a coming of age cult classic.

The cinema club is an open-air movie experience on the 4th floor terrace of the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, where a big screen is placed right under the stars. Doors open 60 minutes before the showing, giving guests enough time to get comfortabl­e with headphones, food and beverages available at the cinema concession­s with contact-less order or pick-up.

Vino Carta hosts summer music series in Little Italy

Neighborho­od wine shop Vino Carta in Little Italy will play the sounds of “San Diego Freak Out DJS,” from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday as part of its Summer Sunset Music Series alongside a specialty menu.

Focused on small, family-run producers and natural wines, Vino Carta offers wines that can be purchased to go or on site. The shop has another location in Solana Beach, but the music series is only at the Little Italy location on select nights in August and September.

Sammy Hagar happy hour coming to Beach House

Rockstar and entreprene­ur, Sammy Hagar, will preside over happy hour at Beach House in Belmont Park at 3:30 p.m. Thursday where he’ll unveil a sand sculpture by profession­al sand sculptor Greg Lebon.

Guests will get a chance to meet Hagar and sample his new sparkling rum cocktails, the first from his Sammy’s Beach Bar Cocktail Co. The rum cocktail brand will support various charities behind beach and ocean clean-up initiative­s, according to the company’s press informatio­n.
