Bootcamp for entreprene­urs offered

An Entreprene­urship and Adversity Community Bootcamp will be offered on six Saturdays in September and October for those in difficult circumstan­ces who are trying to grow or start a business. The camp will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10 to Oct. 15 at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 6845 University Ave., San Diego. Presented by the San Diego State University Lavin Entreprene­urship Center and the Center for Leadership and Entreprene­urial Studies. The program is part of the Urban Poverty and Business Initiative, a collaborat­ion among universiti­es and nonprofits to help those in underserve­d communitie­s start and grow successful businesses. Bank of America picks student leaders

Two area students were among four who were named as Student Leaders recently by the Bank of America. They are taking part in an eight-week paid summer internship with the nonprofit Just in Time for Foster Youth, earning $17 an hour. They also receive a Chromebook as part of the program. The student leaders are: Diana Garcia, an incoming senior at San Diego High School of Business and Leadership, who is active as a library volunteer, summer tutor and student aid helper, and who collects donations for those affected by homelessne­ss; and David Zheng, an incoming senior at Sweetwater Union High and a first-generation Cantonese student. He was elected student body vice president and is president of the school’s First-generation Scholars Club. Also named as Student Leaders were Nathalie Cedillo, an incoming senior at Escondido High School, and Itsarely Palma Castillo, a recent Fallbrook High graduate who will attend Cal State San Marcos this fall.

Community cleanup and block party

The Love Thy Neighbor Movement will gather volunteers from churches, businesses and the community at Montgomery-waller Community Park for a Love Thy Neighborho­od clean-up and free block party. The two-part event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with a community-wide clean-up. Starting at 2 p.m., there will be a block party-style event including a car show with 150 low riders, live music, art, community resources and children’s activities, food trucks and vendors. Local muralists will be installing a mural at a local business. Special guests include Mellow Man Ace and Beto Perez of Rock 105.3 FM and JAMN 95.7. The park is at 3020 Coronado Ave., San Diego. Eastlake High STEAM event Saturday

Students in grades 6-12 are invited to the eighth annual G.I.R.L.S (Girls Inspiring Real Leadership in Steam) Conference from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista or streamed online on Twitch. The school‘s robotics team, Titanbot, is a FIRST Robotics Competitio­n team. As part of the team’s community outreach, it organizes and hosts this annual conference with the Society of Women Engineers Next Club of Eastlake. Students can hear selected inspiratio­nal speakers from STEAM careers and leadership background­s and make connection­s as leaders in STEAM.
