ESCONDIDO — Michael Burns Wallace, fifty year resident of Escondido, passed on June 19, 2022 at the age of 89. Michael was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Lafontaine, whom he married on June 3, 1961. He was also preceded by his parents, Robert C. and Bertha Burns Wallace, by sisters Virginia Curran and Elaine Dietz, and by brothers R. Patrick and Robert C. Jr. Michael is survived by many nieces, nephews, godchildre­n and loving family of choice. Michael had a 60+ year career in baseball, from pitching for the 1954 Big Ten Champion Michigan State University Baseball Team in the College World Series to signing with the Philadelph­ia Phillies Ball Club. After a career in Minor League Baseball, Michael scouted the Southeaste­rn United States for Major League Baseball teams which brought him to the San Diego area. He retired from the Cincinnati Reds organizati­on in 2020. Before scouting, he was privileged to teach at St. Gregory’s in Phoenix, and coached championsh­ip baseball, basketball and football teams. Michael stayed in the lives of many of the students from St. Gregory, as well as many of the young players he scouted, throughout their lives offering friendship and guidance. Michael was known for his generous spirit and is dearly loved by the many children, ball players and scouts he mentored throughout his life.
