Shepherd leading KPBS newsroom; other career moves
Terence Shepherd has joined KPBS as news director, overseeing a department of 45 editors and journalists.
Shepherd started in his new role Aug. 8, coming from WLRN News, the public radio news outlet’s serving Broward, Miamidade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties, where he had been news director since 2013.
He’s also a past chairman of the Radio Television Digital News
Association, the first Black person to hold that position.
Shepherd said at KPBS, he’ll lead “an authentic multiplatform newsroom, connecting with audiences through video, audio and digital platforms.”
Most exciting thing about his new role: “Working with the incredibly ambitious journalists at KPBS. This is a crucial time in this country and it’s more important than ever to continue delivering high-quality news and information to existing audiences while growing, connecting and engaging with new ones as they pursue their version of the American Dream.”
One thing he’s learned about himself in the past year: “Taking on new challenges is an important form of self-care, particularly the positive elements that new adventures offer. KPBS is a new challenge.”
One piece of career advice for others: “I’ll share advice via my sister’s high school basketball coach: ‘Once you’re through learning, you’re through.’ Life should be a process of continuous improvement, career or otherwise. Find a good mentor, either formal or informal. Professional associations and networking groups are great places to connect with one or more people who can help your career. You may be surprised that you also can be that person for anyone at any stage of their careers.”
