- EVENTS + ACTIVITIES

Some cool San Diego events are just around the corner for cyclists, theater buffs or families looking for outdoor fun. Whatever your speed, you’ll find great options here:

Bike the Coronado bridge

Athletes of all ages and abilities will hit the road Sunday, Aug. 28, for the 15th annual Bike the Bay event, a popular San Diego fundraiser where the literal high point is cycling across the Coronado Bay Bridge.

Proceeds go to the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC), a nonprofit that promotes cycling and bicycle safety across the county.

Riders will get the chance to cycle across Coronado bridge at their own pace while traveling through the city on a scenic 25mile route. Riders must be at least 10 years old and helmets are mandatory for all participants.

In its 15-year tenure, the event has drawn more than 45,000 participants and raised more than $750,000 for SDCBC.

Registration is $75 for individuals. The ride starts at 6:30 a.m. at

Embarcadero Marina Park South and will be followed by a post-ride festival with food, drinks, a beer garden and entertainment..

Cocktails for a good cause

From now until September, Cutwater Spirits will be donating $2 from each Coastal Colada Cocktail to The Center SD, which provides programs and services to the LGBTQ+ community in San Diego.

The cocktail was created by Cutwater’s Beverage Ambassador Laura Price.

The Coastal Colada — a mixture of Cutwater’s horchata vodka, pineapple juice, blended sherry, coconut syrup, lime juice and butterfly pea flower-infused Cutwater vodka — is available at Cutwater’s Tasting Room and Kitchen in Miramar, which opened in 2017.

The tasting room, at 9750 Distribution Avenue, also serves brunch, lunch and dinner including appetizers, salads, flatbreads and main courses.

PAW Patrol movie in the park

A free screening of the children’s animated film, “PAW Patrol: The Movie,” will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Macarthur Park in La Mesa as part of the regional Summer Movies in the Park series.

Families can bring a picnic and their leashed pets, but alcohol is prohibited. Games and vendors will set up at the park entrance, with parking available by the baseball field or at overflow lots around the park.

The G-rated movie is a family favorite that tells the story of Ryder and his fellow pups who are called to Adventure City to put an end to Mayor Humdinger’s plan of turning the bustling metropolis into a chaotic place.

Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. If La Mesa is too far to drive, there are movies being screened Friday at several other parks across the county.
