A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his nephew after an hourslong standoff in Barrio Logan on Friday, San Diego police said.

The incident began about 7:40 p.m. after someone reported a shooting on Logan Avenue near South Evans Street, homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said. In a nearby restaurant, officers found a 36-year-old man who had been struck by a bullet that had passed through a wall.

Footage of the incident from Onscene TV showed a police perimeter around the Border X Brewing restaurant on Logan.

The injured man was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening, Campbell said.

Officers were checking the area for suspects or other victims when they spotted a man on the ground in an apartment on Sampson Street near Logan, the lieutenant said.

Another man was in the apartment, and he refused to cooperate with officers as he moved around the home, Campbell said.

While officers tried to talk with the man, they saw he had a firearm and heard one gunshot.

A SWAT team and an emergency negotiation team were called to the complex. Around 11 p.m., the man, identified as Ramiro Cervantes, came out of the apartment and was taken into custody without incident, police said. He was booked into jail on suspicion of murder and an outstanding felony warrant.

Officers then entered the apartment and found a 33-year-old man with traumatic injuries, according to Campbell. He died before he could be taken to a hospital.

Investigators determined the two men, identified as an uncle and nephew, lived together, police said. It’s unclear what led to the shooting.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the department’s homicide unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (888) 580-8477.
