Congregati­ons hold forum on sheriff candidates Fifteen faith congregati­ons from across San Diego will host a candidate forum for the San Diego County Sheriff position from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Candidates Kelly Martinez and John Hemmerling will appear at the forum, held at City of Hope Internatio­nal Church, 4999 Holly Drive, San Diego. Topics discussed will include safety, housing, immigratio­n, and jail deaths. The forum is sponsored by the nonprofit San Diego Organizing Project, a network of faith congregati­ons representi­ng more than 20,000 voters. All county residents are invited to attend. Imperial Beach hosts free symphony concert

The city of Imperial Beach invites all to the free Symphony by the Sea at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Portwood Pier Plaza. The San Diego State University Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra will perform. Enjoy an evening out with family, friends and neighbors. Bring blankets and a picnic dinner.

Scholarshi­ps support water industry careers

The Work for Water Scholarshi­p program was recently launched by the Sweetwater Authority to provide funding for those interested in pursuing a career in the water industry. The scholarshi­p is available to anyone living in the public water agency’s service area: National City, Chula Vista and Bonita. Two $1,000 scholarshi­ps will be awarded to new or currently enrolled students at the Center for Water Studies at Cuyamaca College or another accredited college, community college or trade school with a career goal in the water industry. The full scholarshi­p criteria and applicatio­n are available at www.sweetwater.org/ scholarshi­p. Applicatio­n deadline is Friday. Funds will be awarded in late fall 2022.

Pints for Paws raises money for animal care facility

The Chula Vista Brewery presents Pints for Paws, a fundraiser for the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. Patrons who donate $10 will receive a Collector’s Edition Pints for Paws beer glass and will be entered into a raffle for parking and VIP tickets to two upcoming North Island Credit Union Amphitheat­re concerts: Rüfüs Du Sol (Oct. 5) and Jack Johnson (Oct. 7). Raffle tickets will also be available separately. The brewery is at 294 Third Ave. The animal care facility will be the focus of another event from 4-9 p.m. Saturday — the unveiling of its Ground Floor Murals project. Paul Jimenez and Signe Ditona of Ground Floor Murals created the mural. A contest was held and six winners were selected to have their pet’s portraits on the mural. The mural-reveal “pawty” takes place at the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, 130 Beyer Way. The unveiling will feature live music, pets in costume, vendors, food and more. Hot lunches now serving at I.B. Senior Center The Serving Seniors hot lunch program has started serving at the Imperial Beach Senior Community Center, 1075 Eighth St. Meals are provided free to seniors; however, contributi­ons are accepted. Chula Vista presents free movie at dusk

Chula Vista Parks and Recreation Department presents a free showing of “The Bad Guys” at dusk on Friday at Escaya Park, 1075 Camino Prado. Bring the family out for a movie in the moonlight. Don’t forget chairs, blanket and snacks.

Free music, dance, art classes for youth After-school Mariachi classes at Nestor K-8 are beginning for grades 5-8. Directed by Mariachi Victoria de San Diego and profession­al Mariachi Christophe­r Behrens, Hector Gonzalez, and Diego Cardenas, the classes are part of a pilot program for the South Bay Unified School District. Registrati­on is also open for classes through the nonprofit City Heights Music School. Beginner- through intermedia­te-level classes are available for all ages in violin, piano, guitar and drums. Beginner Mariachi Prep classes are offered on Fridays with Mariachi Victoria de San Diego. Free classes in music, hip hop, and visual art meet on Saturday mornings at CHMS classrooms (3770 Altadena Ave.) and on Friday afternoons at the City Heights Performanc­e Annex (3795 Fairmount Ave.).
