COMMUNITY COLLEGES HOST EVENTS TO HONOR HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

- BY LAURA GROCH laura.groch@sduniontribune.com

Community colleges in San Diego County are marking Hispanic Heritage Month with events and activities that celebrate the cultures and history of Hispanic Americans.

Hispanic Heritage Month began Sept. 15 to coincide with the independence dates of five Latin American countries and Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16. The event started as a weeklong observance but now runs until Oct. 15.

The Latino/chicano community is the fastest-growing in San Diego County, but also has the lowest rates of attainment in higher education, said Sunny Cooke in a statement. She is superintendent/president of Miracosta College and chair of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community College Association.

She added: “A focus on this population is critical for our colleges to support thriving communities and an inclusive regional workforce. We are excited to honor and celebrate our Latinx students and community.”
