HOOKER SPARKS VOLS TO VICTORY, 4-0 START

-

Hendon Hooker threw for 348 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 112 yards and a score to lead No. 11 Tennessee to a 38-33 victory over No. 20 Florida on Saturday.

It was Tennessee’s second win over Florida in the last 18 meetings and snapped a six-game losing streak in the series. The win gave the Volunteers their first 4-0 start since 2016.

Tennessee (4-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) took control in the fourth quarter when it traveled 87 yards for a TD after a fumble by Gators (2-2, 0-2) quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Richardson had a careerhigh 453 passing yards and two touchdowns and ran for 62 and two scores in a raucous Neyland Stadium.

“This is one of the great stories in college football,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said of his team. “The game-day atmosphere that is Rocky Top. It’s what we built.”

“The work we put in is showing,” said Vols running back Jabari Small, who rushed for 90 yards and a TD. “It shows how far we’ve come.”

Tennessee led 17-14 at halftime following a first half loaded with big offensive plays on both sides.

Hooker, who shook off what was reported as an upper body injury, threw for 248 yards, including a 70-yard connection with Bru Mccoy for the Vols’ longest play from scrimmage this season.

A 99-yard drive that ended with a one-yard pass from Hooker to Mccoy, gave Tennessee the lead 7 seconds before the break.

No. 5 Clemson 51, No. 21 Wake Forest 45 (2OT): DJ Uiagalelei kept delivering the ball on target downfield for Clemson in a shootout with host Wake Forest.

That offered enough cover for a defense that struggled for stops — right up until finally coming up with the winning play to cap a doubleovertime classic.

Nate Wiggins broke up Sam Hartman’s fourthdown pass in the end zone to help the Tigers hold off the Demon Deacons (3-1, 0-1). That marked their 14th straight win in the series, this one coming in a tense road game pairing two of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top teams.

Uiagalelei threw for 375 yards and five touchdowns to lead Clemson (4-0, 2-0), including the go-ahead score over the middle to Davis Allen to start the second overtime.

“Honestly, man, that was a crazy game,” Uiagalelei said, adding: “You could just see the heart of our team — the heart of the offense, the heart of the defense. When plays had to be made, we made the plays. That just shows a great sign of a good football team.”

Or, at the least, plenty of perseverance — particularly for Wiggins.

He had been targeted frequently by Hartman and the Wake Forest receivers but came through to knock away Hartman’s final ball for A.T. Perry. He fell to the end zone turf, then sprung up to join his team in celebration after a wild shootout between the reigning Atlantic Division champion Demon Deacons and the preseason league favorite Tigers.

Navy 23, East Carolina 20 (2OT): Daniel Davies, who came into the game without a field-goal attempt this season, made all three of his tries Saturday night, including a 36-yarder in the second overtime and Navy (1-2) beat host East Carolina (2-1).
