Sea Hive puts a modern twist on flea markets

Sea Hive Marketplace in Oceanside has doubled-down on the sustainable and asthetic beauty of vintage goods. The 13,000 square-foot venue at 1555 South Coast Highway — which is celebrating its 5-year anniversary this year — specializes in modern, vintage and artisan-made items, with roughly 100 sellers under one roof.

When it launched in 2017, owners Brandon Vega, Todd Stephenson (Estate Sale Warehouse) and Rob Murray (Karen’s Consignment) hoped to do two things with the space: provide a vintage shopping experience for the community and give artisans and vintage resellers a place to market their goods.

Jenifer Zoutendyk, the store manager, says Seahive Marketplace is the “antithesis of fast fashion. We take a lot of pride in the fact that we’re doing a lot of recycling and repurposing of items. Vintage things tend to be better quality and have more style or are more interesting.”

The market’s inventory is handpicked and includes art, furniture, clothing, vinyl records, books, rugs, jewelry and plants to personal care products. Zoutendyk says she looks for diversity and uniqueness when sourcing new items.

While the collection at Sea Hive is large and varied, there is an entire room dedicated to fine jewelry including Native American accessories, sterling silver, gold, diamonds and gemstones. The same goes for the furniture which consists of mid-century and bohemian-style pieces that are one of a kind.

“We’re really proud to support local small business owners and help small artists,” Zoutendyk said. “(This place) has really filled a niche (in our community.”

Sea Hive Marketplace is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday.
