LA MESA — Kay Lene Fleming, aka Mama Kay, Mama Chicken, Yaya, passed away after suffering a major stroke. She was given strength in a miraculous blessing to be conscious and able to say farewell to her family.

Kay was a lifelong resident of La Mesa who was loved by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Lucky; son, Gabriel, and wife Kimberly; daughter, Amanda, and husband Michael; and beloved grandsons, Ethan and Pierce.

Kay was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. A wonderful homemaker and exceptional cook, her family was so blessed by her creative expressions of love through crafts, décor and food. She was always present and volunteered for her children’s sports and school activities. One of her dreams was to be a grandmother, and she was the most loving and dedicated Yaya. Kay was perpetually engaged in acts of service for others and lending support to

anyone in need.

Kay worked as an Instructional Aide, assisting students with significant cognitive and physical disabilitiescontinually going above and beyond to enhance the lives of her students. During retirement, she continued to volunteer with students with significant disabilities in Kimberly’s classroom. Kay was also active in the recovery community for the last 15 years of her life, helping countless women live a sober lifestyle. Kay was a pillar in this community as well – hosting book studies, social activities, and craft gatherings.

Kay created a home where everyone felt welcome, comfortable, and loved. She was the most generous gift-giver, ensuring every gift was given with love and thoughtfulness. Although Kay was very ill for the past few years, she continued her generosity in both time and gifts. She always had a smile and open arms for anyone in need. Kay embodied love, compassion, and mercy here on Earth. The memories of her lively spirit remain in the hearts of all of those who knew and loved her.

A public celebration of life for friends and family will take place on October 22, 2pm, at Helix Charter High School in the outdoor pavilion.
