San Diego County Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-meyer is retiring after a decade overseeing a multibillion-dollar budget and thousands of county workers.

She has served the county for 25 years, starting as a deputy CAO after working in private industry.

She became the assistant CAO, then took over the executive position in 2012, overseeing an annual budget of more than $7 billion and a workforce that now includes nearly 20,000 employees.

The chief administrative officer carries out the Board of Supervisors’ policies and directs daily operations in areas including health and human services, public safety, roads, parks and libraries.

During Robbins-meyer’s tenure as CAO, the county added eight new libraries, 33 parks and 55 miles of trails, the county said.

She will remain in her position while the county plans for her replacement. Officials said that process is expected to extend into 2023.
