SAN DIEGO — Jane Louise Van Benthuysen, 103, was born in Montgomery City, MO, to T.R. and Chloe (Mason) Hancock. There, she attended elementary through high school graduating in 1937. From there she attended the Univ. of Missouri obtaining her degree in English and a teaching certificat­e. She taught high school English before heading to New York to complete her MA in Journalism at NYU. Within hours of completing her first semester finals on January 20, 1945, she married her long-time love, Everett Van Benthuysen.

Moving to San Diego where her husband worked for the U-T, she began teaching Business English at then SD City College until her son, Thom, was born. She returned to teach at SDCC until Mesa College opened where she taught until her retirement. Raising her family in Lemon Grove, they ultimately moved to the Mira Mesa area. Her final move was to Belmont Village Retirement Community in 2010. The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Belmont and those from Sharp Hospice for the great care and positive outlook they provided for her.

She is survived by her son, Thom (Ginny), granddaugh­ters, Cory Hoffman (Reuben) and Amanda Beckham (David), great-grandchild­ren, Kaya and Curren Hoffman and Nash and Cade Beckham. A private ceremony was conducted and a celebratio­n of life will be held at 1PM at Tierrasant­a Lutheran Church (11240 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.) on Nov 10. Casual attire with a splash of color.
