Sabres 4, Bruins 3 (OT): Alex Tuch scored his second goal of the game in overtime, and visiting Buffalo rallied for a victory over Nhl-best Boston for its sixth straight win. Tage Thompson scored his team-leading 27th goal and Ukko-pekka Luukkonen stopped 37 shots for the Sabres, who won for just the second time in their last 11 games against the Bruins.

Capitals 9, Canadiens 2: Alex Ovechkin recorded his 30th career hat trick to speed up his pursuit of Wayne Gretkzy’s goal record, Charlie Lindgren made 31 saves against his first NHL team and Washington skated circles around visiting Montreal.

Blue Jackets 4, Blackhawks 1: Gustav Nyquist scored two shorthande­d goals, Joonas Korpisalo made 26 saves and host Columbus ended a seven-game losing streak. Johnny Gaudreau had two assists for his 13th assist in December, tying a franchise record set by Artemi Panarin in 2017.

Golden Knights 5, Predators 4 (OT): Nic Hague scored on a shot on a delayed penalty with 2:56 left in overtime, helping host Vegas overcome a hat trick by Filip Forsberg. The Golden Knights are 4-0 on the final day of the year, and heading into the new year with a Western Conference-leading 52 points.

Flyers 4, Kings 2: Noah Cates scored a go-ahead, short-handed goal in the third period, and visiting Philadelph­ia snapped Los Angeles’ seven-game point streak.

Lightning 5, Coyotes 3: Steven Stamkos scored his 498th goal and host Tampa Bay rallied to beat Arizona.

Wild 5, Blues 2: Ryan Hartman scored twice to help visiting Minnesota beat St. Louis in its first meeting since the first round of the playoffs last season.

Red Wings 4, Senators 2: Lucas Raymond had a goal and an assist, and host Detroit scored three times in the first 31 ⁄2 minutes of the third period to beat Ottawa.

Stars 5, Sharks 2: Fredrik Olofsson’s first NHL goal was the eventual winner, and host Dallas beat San Jose. The Sharks’ Erik Karlsson, who leads NHL defensemen with 51 points, extended his point streak to 12 games.

Maple Leafs 6, Avalanche 2: Michael Bunting had two goals, and visiting Toronto spoiled Nathan Mackinnon’s return for Colorado.

Flames 3, Canucks 2: Mackenzie Weegar had a goal and an assist and Calgary beat visiting Vancouver.

Jets 2, Oilers 1: Kyle Connor and Neal Pionk each had a goal and an assist to help visiting Winnipeg beat Edmonton.

Oilers 7, Kraken 2: Connor Mcdavid had a goal and four assists, and Edmonton beat host Seattle.
