Free flu testing at several county sites
San Diegans can now be tested for influenza at several South County sites that formerly only provided COVID-19 testing and certain treatment options. The no-cost testing appointments are being made available at COVID-19 testing locations statewide that are funded through a California Department of Public Health contract. Appointments are recommended for the locations, although drop-ins will be accommodated if scheduling permits. The locations are open various hours: former Boys and Girls Club, 1301 Oleander Ave., Chula Vista; former USD Electronics Recycling Center, 5330 Linda Vista Road, San Diego; Heart Revolution Church, 1920 Sweetwater Road, National City; Imperial Beach Sports Park Recreation Center, 425 Imperial Beach Blvd., Imperial Beach. Chula Vista Senior Volunteer Patrol seeking volunteers
The Chula Vista Police Department is looking for volunteers for its Senior Volunteer Patrol program. Duties include non-critical/non-hazardous tasks such as vacation checks, traffic control, abatement notices and minor parking citations. No law enforcement experience is needed. Those age 50-plus who have good moral character are encouraged to apply. The next training academy will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27-31. Credit union provides $5K in teacher grants
North Island Credit Union recently announced the recipients of its Fall 2022 Teacher Grant program. Ten grants of $500 each were awarded to educators in order to underwrite class projects countywide; nine of the grantees were from south or central San Diego County. Among the projects awarded were launching a class-based business, starting a forensic science program, and creating a kindergarten vegetable garden. Grantees are: Marcus Artates, High Tech High School, Chula Vista; Keying Deng, University City High School, San Diego; Taylor Gonzalez, Rowan Elementary School, San Diego; Tan Huynh, Elevate School, San Diego; Brenna Kelly, Casillas Elementary School, Chula Vista; Karen Koehler, Silver Gate Elementary School, San Diego; Silvia Miranda, Nicoloff Elementary School, San Ysidro; Joseph Szakovits, Bonita Vista High School, Chula Vista; and Kristine Weiner, Sandburg Elementary School, San Diego. Since the program began in 2012, the credit union has awarded $165,000 in teacher grants to support classroom programs. Olivewood Gardens hosts lunchtime class Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center hosts a free in-person walking tour and a sit-down Q&A from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday for an opportunity to learn more about the nonprofit’s programs. Red Cross blood drive scheduled in National City
