Connection is music to the ears of Lovesong Coffee

- BY ROXANA BECERRIL Roxana Becerril is a freelance writer.

There's more than coffee brewing at Lovesong Coffee and Market in North Park, a space intended for pouring hand-crafted lattes and fostering loving human connections.

“All of life is a love song,” said the shop's co-owner, Mike Anderson. “I truly believe that we were all given a chance to live on this earth…life's a journey with lots of peaks and valleys. It's all a worthy story (and) worthy to be shared.”

Anderson, who owns the space with his wife Jess, always knew being a business owner would be part of his story. In 2009, the couple opened Salvage Salon in Phoenix, Arizona, and eventually relocated the hair salon to

North Park. The Andersons also opened Oh Glory, a holistic spa, in the same neighborhood. Lovesong is their third business on the same block of North Park Way.

Anderson said he and Jess have enjoyed serving the local community and are excited to continue doing it through Lovesong. After a “tough” and “isolating” pandemic year in which the hair salon was shut down for 10 months, he said he knew his next project — which would coincidentally be next door — had to be “fun and as relational as possible.”

The space has natural light pouring in from an open glass-paneled garage door that illuminates a center ushaped coffee bar, curated market and exposed bleacher-style seating in the back. Anderson said the style is intentional and designed to have baristas engage with guests and vice versa.

“We're just a family with five girls who love our neighborhood, we're not some cool company, we're just…trying to provide and teach entrepreneurship,” Anderson said.

In terms of pours, coffee drinks feature unusual yet creative ingredients, such as caramelized fig and smoked salt with espresso and milk used in the Salvage Sister or ginger used in the La Roja.
